The Wishes, Perceived Barriers, and Support Needs of People Living in Persistent Poverty
This study explores the wishes, perceived barriers, and support needs of people living in persistent poverty. These remain undetermined, yet are essential for developing effective support for this group. We conducted semi-structured video call interviews with people living in persistent poverty ( n = 14), peer workers ( n = 5), and practitioners ( n = 5) in five municipalities in the Netherlands. The findings show that wishes revolve around impro…
Fostering societal participation of marginalised people in street-outreach services in the Netherlands
Marginalisation is a multilevel phenomenon in society depriving people from essential rights, resources, and opportunities. Street-outreach services in the Netherlands, like social street work (SSW), support these marginalised people in fostering their participation in society as an answer to their marginalised position in society. We followed 927 clients in SSW over an eight-month period. Clients filled in a questionnaire at three timepoints. We…

A longitudinal cohort study was carried out amongst clients who were in touch with professionals from a Dutch social street work (SSW) organisation. We used a questionnaire to examine client perspectives ( n = 332) on the relational and goal‐oriented part of the working relationship after a minimum of 8 months of contac…

What Makes Intentional Unidirectional Peer Support for Homeless People Work? An Exploratory Analysis Based on Clients’ and Peer Workers’ Perceptions
Homeless people are increasingly supported by peer workers in one-on-one mentorship relations called intentional unidirectional peer support (IUPS). Insight is therefore needed into the application and outcome of IUPS for this vulnerable population. This study examined the outcomes, critical elements, and working mechanisms of IUPS within homeless services from the perspective of both clients receiving IUPS and peer workers providing IUPS. Semi-s…
Subgroups of tenants at risk of eviction due to rent arrears in five Dutch cities
This study identifies subgroups of tenants in a sample of 495 tenants at risk of eviction, due to rent arrears, by 16 housing associations in five Dutch municipalities, and examines the attuning of services to the needs of the tenants in these subgroups. Latent class analysis with eight known risk factors for eviction identified five subgroups of tenants, which can be characterised as young immigrants, native Dutch tenants with little support, hi…
