Stakeholder perspectives on factors influencing the successful implementation of whole-school approaches to mental health
Background: Whole-school approaches (WSAs) to mental health aim to promote collaborative, system-wide action by school communities to reduce stigma, raise awareness and embed mental health as ‘everyone’s business’. Although investment in such approaches has increased in England, implementation remains challenging due to variation in interpretation and the complexity of engaging diverse stakeholders. Objectives: The NHS Trailblazer programme intro…
The role of rural health entrepreneurship in community resilience: A model of multidimensional value creation
Healthcare providers have been encouraged to become entrepreneurs to fill a widening service gap in depleted rural areas. This paper explores how these entrepreneurs add value, finding a complex multidimensional process of value creation in rural healthcare. Taking a grounded approach, 40 health entrepreneurs were interviewed across the health settings of four European countries characterised by ‘mixed’ public–private healthcare. Through an insti…
Changing healthcare professionals' non-reflective processes to improve the quality of care
Combining theories of habit and routines has the potential to advance implementation science by providing a fuller understanding of the range of factors, operating at multiple levels of analysis, which can impact on the behaviours of healthcare professionals, and so quality of care provision
Theorising the shift to video consulting in the UK during the Covid-19 pandemic: Analysis of a mixed methods study using practice theory
We studied video consulting in the National Health Service during 2020-2021 through video interviews, an online survey and online discussions with people who had provided and participated in such consultations. Video consulting had previously been used for selected groups in limited settings in the UK. The pandemic created a seismic shift in the context for remote consulting, in which video transformed from a niche technology typically introduced…

Evidence suggests that mental health interventions are more effective when they consider the whole context of schools; addressing the needs of all students, their families, and staff; otherwise known as a whole-school approach (WSA). The UK Government is piloting WSAs to transform mental health and wellbeing by locating educational mental health practitioners in educational settings across England. This study aims to develop a 'bottom-up' underst…
Framing the failure of medical implants: Media representations of the ASR hip replacements in the UK
BACKGROUND: During the twentieth century, hip replacement became one of the most popular and successful operations. In the 1990s, a new type of hip replacement namely the metal-on-metal hip resurfacing was developed. This paper draws on one of the available implants, namely the DePuy Orthopaedics' Articular Surface Replacement (ASR) hip system which was withdrawn from the market because of higher than expected rates of failure. It examines media …

Telecare’ refers to the use of digital or information and communication technologies (ICTs) to facilitate health and social care delivery to individuals in their homes. This article explores the phenomenon by foregrounding its interconnections with work activities, paid and unpaid. It draws on research as a part of the design and deployment of a set of telecare innovations for older people in an Italian municipality. The project was conceived at …
Moving beyond local practice: Reconfiguring the adoption of a breast cancer diagnostic technology
Innovating Relationships: Taking a co-productive approach to the shaping of telecare services for older people
We reflect on the experiences of OLDES (Older People@Home), a European Commission 6th Framework-co-funded project, which sought to undertake a user-centred design of telecare services for older people. A series of interventions were undertaken with the objective of nurturing co-production. The aim was a rebalancing of the techno-centric focus of the system development and delivery partners in the project in order to address the wider needs and in…
