Norway’s research policy for Svalbard
Scholars of critical geography and geopolitics have long noted the intersection between research and strategic interest in the polar areas. This article focuses on how this link is displayed in the case of Svalbard, an Arctic archipelago under Norwegian sovereignty. While Norway' research policy in Svalbard has traditionally been welcoming and supportive of international research activity with little interference in the organization of research, …
Redefining Arctic boundaries in a changing climate
The Arctic rapidly transforms due to global warming and increased human activities, triggering complex changes at unprecedented speeds that challenge conventional institutional responses. We analyse these changes through the lenses of social, political, and environmental boundaries and investigate their impacts on both inhabitants' livelihoods and the region's political framework. Power and interests in environmental policy processes
Climate and environmental changes pose tremendous challenges to ecosystems worldwide. While this underscores the need for more significant conservation efforts, these measures often clash with human activities. Participation and transparency may be key to reducing conflict and ensuring high-quality decisions, but facilitating such processes has proven difficult with many interests and stakeholders involved. This often leads to disputes over envir…
Rethinking the exercise of sovereignty in the Anthropocene
The Role of the Literature and Theory in Defining and Bounding a Case
Defining and bounding a case are recognized as especially important components in designing a case study. Discussions concerning the case study methodology and the relationship between theory and research in this domain has been featured in the literature for some time now. Yet, the process of identifying or constructing a case and the contribution of theory in this space seem neglected. This paper discusses how a case can be defined and bounded,…
