Seasonal variations in suicide mortality in Canada: A nationwide analysis
This study confirms seasonal patterns in suicide mortality in Canada, peaking during the summer months. Such patterns are more prominent and stable among males, and its amplitude was larger among older adults. Contrary to the common perception that suicide rates peak in January, our findings show a summer peak. Future research should explore the underlying mechanisms driving these seasonal variations and their demographic differences
Socioeconomic inequalities in adolescent health complaints: A multilevel latent class analysis in 45 countries
Our study evaluated the relationship between adolescent health complaints and socioeconomic position in 45 countries. Data are from the 2017/2018 international Health Behaviour in School-aged Children survey which used proportionate sampling among adolescents aged 11 to 15 years old ( n =228,979). Multilevel, multinomial regression analysis assessed the association between the multilevel latent classes with socioeconomic status (SES; at the house…
The association between social media use and physical activity among Canadian adolescents: A Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) study
The findings of this study suggest that non-active SMU was significantly associated with lower PA levels. Problematic SMU was only significantly associated with lower PA levels in the exercise domain. Intense SMU was associated with higher odds of meeting the PA recommendation
The mental health of young people who are not in education, employment, or training: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Increased alcohol use, heavy episodic drinking, and suicide ideation during the Covid-19 pandemic in Canada
In the Canadian general population during the COVID-19 pandemic, there were significant associations between suicide ideation and increased alcohol use as well as past month heavy episodic drinking across specific sociodemographic subgroups. Future research could explore these associations while adjusting for social determinants of health such as income security, employment, education, social support, stress, and mental health
Virtual Photovoice With Older Adults: Methodological Reflections during the Covid-19 Pandemic
Photovoice is a participatory action research method in which participants take and narrate photographs to share their experiences and perspectives. This method is gaining in popularity among health researchers. Few studies, however, have described virtual photovoice data collection despite the growing interest among qualitative health researchers for online data collection. As such, the aim of this article is to discuss the implementation of a v…
Food insecurity, state fragility and youth mental health: A global perspective
Youth in fragile settings face disproportionate risks of experiencing food insecurity and poor mental health. Cross-national evidence is lacking on the association between food insecurity and mental health in youth populations, and on state fragility as a social determinant of these experiences. We analysed data from six cycles of the Gallup World Poll (2014-2019), an annual survey that contains multi-item scales of food insecurity, mental health…
Relative food insecurity, mental health and wellbeing in 160 countries
Association of Social Support During Adolescence With Depression, Anxiety, and Suicidal Ideation in Young Adults
Importance: Mental health problems are common during the transition from adolescence to young adulthood. Although perceived social support and mental health problems have been shown to be concurrently associated, longitudinal studies are lacking to document the directionality of this association, especially in emerging adulthood (late teens to late 20s). Objective: To test whether social support in emerging adulthood protects against later depres…
How Are Adolescents Sleeping? Adolescent Sleep Patterns and Sociodemographic Differences in 24 European and North American Countries
PURPOSE: Insufficient and poor sleep patterns are common among adolescents worldwide. Up to now, the evidence on adolescent sleep has been mostly informed by country-specific studies that used different measures and age groups, making direct comparisons difficult. Cross-national data on adolescent sleep that could inform nations and international discussions are lacking. We examined the sleep patterns of adolescents across 24 countries and by gen…
Multidimensional Poverty Among Adolescents in 38 Countries: Evidence from the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) 2013/14 Study
Early-life income inequality and adolescent health and well-being
Social support and protection from depression: Systematic review of current findings in Western countries
Adolescent suicidal behaviours in 32 low- and middle-income countries
OBJECTIVE: To estimate prevalence of suicidal ideation and suicidal ideation with a plan in each surveyed country and to examine cross-national differences in associated risk factors. METHODS: We analysed data of students aged 13-17 years who participated in the 2003-2012 Global School-based Health Surveys in 32 countries, of which 29 are low- and middle-income. We used random effects meta-analysis to generate regional and overall pooled estimate…
Hunger and overweight in Canadian school-aged children: A propensity score matching analysis
Neighborhood socioeconomic conditions and depression: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Validity and Reliability of a Brief Symptom Checklist to Measure Psychological Health in School-Aged Children
Neighbourhood characteristics and 10-year risk of depression in Canadian adults with and without a chronic illness
P2-94 Types of smokers, depression and disability in type 2 diabetes: A latent class analysis
Despite the detrimental effects of smoking on health, a high number of adults with type 2 diabetes continue to smoke. Identifying distinct profiles of smokers could help tailor smoking intervention programs in this population and may help uncover high risk subgroups with unfavourable health outcomes. This study examined whether smokers with type 2 diabetes could be classified into different profiles based on socioeconomic characteristics, smoking…
