  • Learning from Experience: Lessons from Community-based Engagement for Improving Participatory Marine Spatial Planning

Maggie Yet, Patricia Manuel et al.•ARTICLE•Planning Practice and Research•2022

Marine spatial planning (MSP) is critiqued for inadequate stakeholder engagement practices, particularly for determining community-level interests. Community engagement is foundational to community planning, a local-level process in terrestrial planning. This study compared the community engagement experiences of practitioners in local and national-level organizations in Nova Scotia, Canada, likely to participate in MSP to participatory best prac…

  • Sharing victories: Characteristics of collaborative strategies of environmental non-governmental organizations in Canadian marine conservation

    Open Access•Rachael Cadman, Bertrum H Macdonald et al.•ARTICLE•Marine Policy•2020

Over the last 50 years, non-state actors, particularly environmental non-governmental organizations (ENGOs), have taken on increasingly important roles in environmental governance. These roles have strengthened capacity in policy development and enhanced connections between decision makers and the public. How environmental NGOs navigate the tension between maintaining independence from government while also influencing decisions within political …

  • Of Climate and Weather: Examining Canadian Farm and Livestock Organization Discourses from 2010 to 2015

Open Access•Wesley Tourangeau, Kate Sherren et al.•ARTICLE•Weather, Climate, and Society•2019

Producer organizations representing Canada’s farm and livestock sectors are powerful change agents and advocates for their industries, particularly during challenging times such as climate- or weather-related hardships. Such organizations have a complex role: engaging with policy-makers, as well as their memberships and the public, to pursue the interests of their specific communities. This paper includes an examination of how farm producer organ…

    Open Access•Alexander Ly, Bertrum H Macdonald et al.•ARTICLE•First Monday•2012

The Internet is increasingly seen as integral to economic progress and prosperity. Yet how the Internet will be managed as it grows and diversifies remains a hotly contested topic, as the debate on net neutrality demonstrates. Whether the Internet is neutral or not has serious implications for Internet service providers (ISPs), businesses operating online, governments, and civil society. With these stakeholders and varying interests at play, the …

  • Women in Canadian Science and Technology before World War I: Their Publication Record

    Open Access•Clara M Chu, Bertrum H Macdonald•ARTICLE•Scientia Canadensis Canadian…•2009

Little has been written about the work of women in Canadian science and technology, particularly for the period prior to the First World War. In this study, drawing largely on data in Science and Technology in Canadian History: A Bibliography of Primary Sources to 1914 , we present a picture of the activity of almost 150 women authors. Representing 1.4% of all known authors of the period, these women wrote on a variety of scientific and technolog…

  • Arrestin-2 and G Protein-coupled Receptor Kinase 5 Interact with NFκB1 p105 and Negatively Regulate Lipopolysaccharide-stimulated ERK1/2 Activation in Macrophages

Open Access•Narayanan Parameswaran, Annie McKillop et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biological Chemistry•2006

Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are a recently described receptor class involved in the regulation of innate and adaptive immunity. Here, we demonstrate that arrestin-2 and GRK5 (G protein-coupled receptor kinase 5), proteins that regulate G protein-coupled receptor signaling, play a negative role in TLR4 signaling in Raw264.7 macrophages. We find that lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced ERK1/2 phosphorylation is significantly enhanced in arrestin-2 and …
