  • Lively and Unstable Implosions

Open Access•Jennifer Crane, Maria Fannin et al.•ARTICLE•GeoHumanities•2026

This article is a collaborative piece, written between a group of geographers and artists. Together, we explore an “ad-hoc archive” of extraordinary and everyday objects associated with reproduction, broadly conceived. Some objects are directly or indirectly aimed at enhancing reproductive health or well-being, others at arresting or enhancing fertility, others still at expanding notions of reproduction beyond the genetic or biological. Objects a…

  • Screening pasts for healthy futures

    Open Access•Laura Perler•ARTICLE•GENDER – Zeitschrift für…•2025

What kind of life is considered reproducible in a fertility clinic? What is the specific understanding of technology and progress and what does this have to do with the desirability of certain bodies? What does egg donation have to do with selection? These are the guiding questions of this article, in which I explore the idea of the ‘healthy’ baby in third-party reproduction in Spain. Based on my ethnographic fieldwork in a fertility clinic in Va…

  • Geographies of reproductive justice

Open Access•C Schurr, Susanne Schultz et al.•ARTICLE•Progress in Human Geography•2025•Cited by: 3•References: 38

Contemporary struggles for reproductive rights across the globe once more show how politics shape intimate reproductive experiences. The intersectional feminist concept of reproductive justice has become an important political and theoretical agenda to address power relations in the realm of reproductive rights. We argue that the justice-based approach of the concept can serve as an umbrella for debates taking place in diverse subdisciplinary fie…

  • Quality of life and associated factors in Swiss trans people

Open Access•David García Núñez, Giulia Frigerio et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2024

This study shows lowered mental QoL and associations of low mental QoL with psychological distress, low self-esteem and stressful life events in trans individuals in Switzerland. The findings concur with the Gender Minority Stress Model and point out that medical transition must not be viewed in isolation but must be embedded in the framework of integrative psychosocial support

  • Intimate Voices in Transnational Reproductive Markets

    A Molas, Laura Perler•ARTICLE•Medical Anthropology•2024•References: 51

The idea of this special issue, which foregrounds the experiences and perspectives of egg donors and surrogates, emerged following the completion of our respective doctoral research on the reproduc

  • In/Visible - A Photographic Journey Into the Lives of Egg Donors in Spain

    Open Access•Laura Perler, Tamara Sánchez Pérez•ARTICLE•Medical Anthropology•2024•References: 42

The result of a collaboration between an anthropologist and a photographer, in this photo essay we aim to visualize the medical process of egg donation and the quotidian lives of egg donors in Spain. By extending their biographies beyond the moment of extraction, we shed light on the intertwined messiness of medical procedures and everyday life and the precarious circumstances in which egg donation takes place in Spain today. Our aim is to highli…

  • Reproductive geopolitics

    Open Access•Laura Perler, C Schurr et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning C…•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 36

Building on work in feminist geopolitics, we discuss how the governance of in/fertility affects the value assigned to different bodies and the question whose bodies and lives are considered as worthy of reproducing in Mexico. To reveal the geopolitical entanglements of past and present forms of reproductive governance, we investigate the transnational connections of Mexico’s fertility network with Spain and the United States of America. We juxtap…

  • Intimate Lives in the Global Bioeconomy

    Open Access•Laura Perler, C Schurr•ARTICLE•Body & Society•2021•Cited by: 17•References: 49

Research on cross-border reproductive care has shown how the geographical, historical, economic and political contexts in which egg donation takes place shape this transnational practice. As many women offer their oocytes due to their precarious conditions, they become seen as 'bioavailable bodies'. The presence of these bioavailable bodies is key to the emergence of global egg donation hotspots. We argue that feminist research needs to go beyond…

  • Selecting women, taming bodies? Body ontologies in egg donation practices in Spain

    Open Access•A Molas, Laura Perler•ARTICLE•Tapuya Latin American Science…•2020•Cited by: 9•References: 33

According to the Spanish law of assisted reproduction, women intending to donate eggs must be “in good psychophysical health” and “do not suffer from genetic or infectious hereditary diseases transmissible to the offspring” (chapter II, article 5). What a “good” psychophysical health condition is, what the “transmissible diseases” are, and what counts as disease at all remains contested. In this paper, we explore how these broad legal criteria ma…
