Arguments and Proto-arguments in Multimodal Protest
In this paper, we propose a conceptual framework to understand and examine the argumentative content in multimodal protest. Protests arise in public controversies when people are dissatisfied with the way institutions deal with problems in society, and when conventional routes for addressing these issues are deemed problematic, especially for the powerless. Protest typically involves not only verbal expressions, but also the use of images, and bo…
Exploiting metaphor in disagreement
The use of metaphors is a common strategy in argumentative discourse to resolve disagreements and create common ground. Nonetheless, metaphor use could also backfire. An opponent could, for example, hijack a metaphor to oppose the proponent’s standpoint. The current study focuses on this type of resistance, which we have dubbed ‘metaphor exploitation’. Such exploitation is of particular interest because proponents are pragmatically committed to t…
Metaphors in Interaction
This paper analyses the interactional dynamics of reusing and resisting metaphors of the body, illness and medical treatment in consultations between doctors and chronic pain patients in a pain clinic. Research has evidenced the general importance of metaphors in talk, and in health care settings specifically. Metaphors serve as a way of structuring our reasoning and understanding, including of illness experiences. This is particularly relevant i…
Types of Resistance to Metaphor
The appropriateness and persuasiveness of using metaphors has become subject of debate in both the academic and the public arena. Recent studies have shown that particular metaphors give rise to resistance, yet the nature of metaphor resistance is still hardly explored. This paper therefore examines the ways in which metaphors can be explicitly resisted, focusing on metaphors that are used in argumentative discourse. We propose an analytical tool…
Machines, journeys, prisons and yo-yos
The metaphors used by health professionals and patients give insight in the lived experience of having and treating chronic pain. In this way, they can contribute to our understanding of patients' experiences and challenges, how they recur in clinical communication, and how they are related to wider discourses on health, illness and pain
Coding Metaphors in Interaction
With this study protocol, we present our approach to collaboratively coding metaphors in medical consultations, using the qualitative analysis software package ATLAS.ti. This project came with a number of challenges but also yielded a coded data set that was rich and versatile, and allowed for a wide array of analyses. We therefore believe it can be of interest to share the details of the process, to (1) provide an hands-on approach to qualitativ…
The Study of Metaphor in Argumentation Theory
This paper offers a review of the argumentation-theoretical literature on metaphor in argumentative discourse. Two methodologies are combined: the pragma-dialectical theory is used to study the argumentative functions attributed to metaphor, and distinctions made in metaphor theory and the three-dimensional model of metaphor are used to compare the conceptions of metaphor taken as starting point in the reviewed literature. An overview is provided…
The relevance of metaphor in argumentation. Uniting pragma-dialectics and deliberate metaphor theory
Argumentative discussions can contain various types of metaphor, but these do not all fulfil the same function in discourse: while some seem to express part of the argumentation, others seem to be irrelevant. So far, argumentation research has not explained when metaphors should be considered relevant for argumentation. In this paper, insights from deliberate metaphor theory are combined with the pragma-dialectical theory of argumentation. Based …
Anticipating Resistance to Health Advice
This article addresses the problem of resistance to health advice. It is argued that potential criticism against advice in health settings can be systematically defined with the help of the felicity conditions of the speech act of advising. By taking into account the setting in which health advice is delivered, specified conditions for advising in health settings are proposed. The objective of this study is to present a systematic overview of rel…
