  • The History and Historiography of Fisheries in the Age of the “Oceanic Turn”

    Open Access•Romain Grancher•ARTICLE•Annales Histoire Sciences Sociales•2025

Fishing, the last practice of exploiting nature based on the large-scale predation and commercialization of wild animal resources, has not always received the attention it deserves from the social sciences in terms of its ecological, anthropological, and historical significance. 1 Studies devoted to the subject, long confined to narrowly specialized and spatially compartmentalized subfields of research such as maritime history and anthropology, h…

  • Knowledge from Experience: The Making of Fisheries Policy (France, 1680–1860)

    Open Access•Romain Grancher•ARTICLE•Annales Histoire Sciences Sociales•2025

This article is based on an analysis of some thirty fishing experiments carried out on the coast of the English Channel between the 1680s and the 1860s. It describes the early development of an experimental way of governing marine resources under the ancien régime, followed by its gradual normalization over the course of the nineteenth century. As the article shows, the fishing policies designed to ensure the conservation of these resources were …

    Open Access•Romain Grancher•ARTICLE•Annales Histoire Sciences Sociales•2025

  • Records reveal the vast historical extent of European oyster reef ecosystems

    Open Access•Ruth H Thurstan, Hannah McCormick et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Sustainability•2024•References: 3

Anthropogenic activities have impacted marine ecosystems at extraordinary scales. Biogenic reef ecosystems built by the European flat oyster ( Ostrea edulis ) typically declined before scientific monitoring. The past form and extent of these habitats thus remains unknown, with such information potentially providing valuable perspectives for current management and policy. Collating >1,600 records published over 350 years, we created a map of histo…

  • Hybrid islands: Some reflections on the intersection between Island Studies and environmental history

    Open Access•Romain Grancher•ARTICLE•Coastal Studies & Society•2023

Islands have fascinated environmental historians, but looking at the field as a whole, this attraction has not resulted in attempts at synthesis or strong theoretical propositions. Moreover, it has not necessarily enabled a departure from reductive and continentalist conceptions of the islands, such as that old established idea of island environments as “continents in miniature.” Thus, if islands currently represent one of the most important site…

    Open Access•Romain Grancher•ARTICLE•Annales Histoire Sciences Sociales•2023

    Open Access•Romain Grancher•ARTICLE•Artefact•2021

  • Fishermen’s taverns: Public houses and maritime labour in an early modern French fishing community

    Open Access•Romain Grancher•ARTICLE•International Journal of Maritime…•2016•Cited by: 1

This article is based on civil proceedings brought before Dieppe’s Admiralty Court by actors from the local fishing world, especially boat masters. It provides an account of the functions performed by inns, taverns and alehouses within this professional environment. Paying close attention to the social uses of public houses which transpire through judicial archives, it aims to show how these institutions, which played a key role in Old Regime soc…
