Multimedia: Asynchronous Distributed EducationŠ A Review and Case Study
Interest in and delivery of distributed education has increased rapidly in the past decade. Technology brings the promise of creating superior learning environments relative to the traditional classroom as well as delivering these learning experiences to greater numbers and more diverse audiences. However, successful creation and delivery of distributed courses requires new dimensions in thought and creativity because a direct translation from cl…
Telecommunications/Multimedia: Distributed Learning Course Creation
Carpenter and his colleagues discussed the process of creating an asynchronous learning experience for postsecondary students that employed a blend of CD-ROM and Internet technology. Whereas this hybrid approach created a superb learning environment, the rapidly evolving software and hardware available for the capture, compression, and reproduction of the educational experiences resulted in many changes in the creation process. This article descr…

Multimedia: Hybrid Asynchronous Courses Using Internet and CD—ROM— Editing, Production, and Authoring Considerations
This article presents information about the process of creating an asynchronous learning experience for postsecondary school students employing a hybrid World Wide Web and CD-ROM technology. The steps include assembling an appropriate studio facility, identifying content experts and training them in the use of pre- and postproduction hardware and software, and designing the product to be user (student) friendly and attractive. Examples are includ…

Multimedia: The Distant Classroom: Hardware, Software, and Administrative Considerations
The introduction of new technology into everyday use is a slow and gradual process. Faculty members may wonder why it is necessary to change and are bewildered by phrases such as learner-centered, distance education, subject-matter expert, and interactive video. Yet, increased faculty participation in the new technologies is a prerequisite for the successful pedagogical implementation of new methods. As a new generation of students enters the uni…
Effects of Category Order on Answers in Mail and Telephone Surveys1
Past research suggests that mail surveys encourage a primacy effect, which is a tendency to choose the first answers from a list, whereas telephone surveys encourage a recency effect, a tendency to choose the last answers from a list. This paper summarizes results from 82 new experiments conducted in 12 separate surveys in seven states. Only four of 33 mail survey comparisons exhibited significant primacy effects, while five of 26 experiments in …
Automating Analysis, Visualization, and Other Social Science Research Tasks
The observation is made in several recent articles that relatively few social scientists are taking advantage of the numerous microcomputer tools that could aid in the accomplishment of social science. At the same time, the increasing degree of automation of software packages that form the computerized toolbox of the social scientists lessens the start-up and use costs of employing the software tools. The task of this paper is to introduce the so…

Statistical and Graphical Research Methods: State of the Art
Recent developments in software products have provided researchers with an opportunity for more effective data analysis and presentation of findings. In addition to expanding researchers' options for data analysis and presentation, the easy-to-use interfaces of new software products will likely decrease the amount of time spent in and improve the results of such activities. This paper discusses the capabilities of several statistics and graphics …
Solitude at Grand Canyon: An application of expectancy theory
The desire for solitude and its fulfillment at Grand Canyon are examined through the framework of expectancy theory. In order to associate variations in solitude fulfillment with backcountry management policy, motive fulfillment is conceptualized as an effect of the environment. Results indicate that 20% of hikers who desired solitude were not fulfilled. There were variations in solitude fulfillment between three distinct backcountry use zones. M…

Software Tools for Data Collection: Microcomputer-Assisted Interviewing
Computer-assisted interviewing by telephone, in person, and through mailed diskette is increasing in use. The phenomenal success of computer-assisted interviewing is attributed to the speed of data collection and processing, increased accuracy of results, lower costs, reductions in respondent-interviewer burden, and the researcher's enhanced ability to elicit appropriate information through detailed contingent questioning or branching systems. He…
Risk perception and behavioral context: U.S. forest service fire management professionals
Fire managers from the U.S. Forest Service were surveyed to determine which decision factors most strongly influenced their fire‐risk decisions. Safety, the resources at risk, public opinion, and the reliability of information were important influences on these decisions. This research allowed direct comparison between fire managers’ perceptions of factor importance and how their fire‐risk decisions changed in response to those factors. These ris…
Recreation and fire management: Public concerns, attitudes, and perceptions
Data from three separate but related surveys address the linkages between recreation and public perception of and attitudes toward fire management. Recreation ranks high among alternative forest resource uses and is a serious concern vis‐à‐vis fire effects. Public acceptance of new fire‐management policies may be greater and more sophisticated than commonly thought. Public knowledge of fire effects and tolerance of light‐intensity fires can be in…

Increasing Mail Questionnaire Response: A Four State Comparison
Low response rates, poor data quality and the perceived necessity of limiting oneself to only a few questions have contributed to avoidance of mail questionnaires in studies of the general public. The effectiveness of a particular method for eliciting response to lengthy questionnaires was tested on state-wide samples of the general public in Arizona, Indiana, North Carolina, and Washington. The method, which depends on systematically manipulatin…
