Modelling the impact of cuts in US Pepfar funding for opioid agonist therapy and needle and syringe programmes on drug-related deaths and HIV and hepatitis C transmission among people who inject drugs
BACKGROUND: The US government paused funding for the US President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) in 2025, including disruptions in funding for opioid agonist therapy (OAT) and needle and syringe programmes (NSP). We evaluated the impact of these disruptions on HIV/HCV transmission and drug-related deaths (DRDs) among people who inject drugs (PWID) for 9 countries where PEPFAR funds OAT. METHODS: We developed a static model of HIV/HCV t…
Ageing disgracefully with Jude Byrne: A special section recognising her life and work
While most special sections in Drug and Alcohol Review are focused on a particular research topic, this collection is devoted posthumously to a person and her interests; Jude Byrne. Unique in her ability to lead work across advocacy, policy and research, Jude used her intelligence and living experience as a person who used drugs to influence policy and practice across the alcohol and other drug, blood-borne virus and community sectors. As we note…
Guiding principles for breaking down drug-related stigma in academic writing
Vale Jude Byrne
March marks the second anniversary of the passing of globally esteemed drug reform advocate Jude Byrne. Internationally, as well as in her home country of Australia, Jude was a courageous advocate for the marginalised. Identifying unapologetically as a person who injects drugs for over 40 years, Jude's living experience drove her human rights perspectives on drug use, law and health. While spearheading political change, Jude inspired generations …

Basic care as exceptional care: Addiction stigma and consumer accounts of quality healthcare in Australia

Building on this literature, we examine the role of stigma in shaping the healthcare expectations of people seen as affected by alcohol and other drug addictions. Our analysis draws on recent theorisations of stigma as a process of social …
The Problem of the Subject: The Politics of Post-mortem Rights in the Aftermath of Drug-related Deaths
In recent years, drug-related deaths have soared around the world. Some of these are overdose deaths, some are due to state violence as part of the ‘war on drugs’. Images of these deaths are often widely circulated in mainstream and social media. They are mobilised by anti-drug campaigners, anti-prohibitionists, family members seeking to memorialise their loved ones, and researchers. In all of these instances, of course, there is no question abou…
Exclusion and hospitality: The Subtle Dynamics of Stigma in Healthcare Access for People Emerging From Alcohol and Other Drug Treatment
This article explores the role of drug use-related stigma in constraining access to healthcare services. Drawing on interviews with 20 people conducted shortly after leaving an Australian alcohol and other drug withdrawal management unit, the article explores their willingness and ability to access primary care, hospital and further services. It finds repeated descriptions of feeling ignored and shamed during efforts to access care, with some des…

HIV, HCV, and Health-Related Harms Among Women Who Inject Drugs: Implications for Prevention and Treatment
BACKGROUND: Although an estimated 3.5 million women inject drugs globally, women are outnumbered 4 to one by men who inject drugs and are often ignored or overlooked in the development and delivery of prevention and treatment services for this population. This study aimed to identify key comorbidities prevalent among women who inject drugs (WWID), consider factors that contribute to vulnerability of this population, and examine implications for p…
