  • Andrew Bonar Law and the Fall of the Asquith Coalition: The December 1916 Cabinet Crisis

    Open Access•R J Q Adams•ARTICLE•Journal of History•1997

With the coming of World War I, Unionist party leader Andrew Bonar Law concluded that the best way to maintain national unity was to suppress interparty strife, and therefore he led his party into a coalition under the Liberal premier, H.H. Asquith, in May 1915. This essay suggests that he continued to support the Asquith coalition only so long as he thought it the best path to unity and victory. In December 1916, however, he lost patience with A…

    Ulrich Trumpener, R J Q Adams•ARTICLE•German Studies Review•1991

Trevor Wilson begins with an essay on the historical significance of the war, Alfred Gollin writes on early British air defense arrangements, and Martin Kitchen discusses civil-military relations in Germany. Critical comment on these papers is given by Thomas C. Kennedy. The w…

    Open Access•R J Q Adams•ARTICLE•Journal of British Studies•1986•Cited by: 6•References: 1

The enactment into law in January 1916 of the first installment of mandatory military service in modern British history was an event whose importance few scholars dispute. While invariably considered a significant break in the British political and military tradition, recent scholarship has tended to treat the passage of the first Military Service Act as an episode that has little new to tell us about the political rivalry within the coalition ca…

  • The National Service League And Mandatory Service In Edwardian Britain

    Open Access•R J Q Adams, Richard Adams•ARTICLE•Armed Forces & Society•1985

There existed in Great Britain in the years 1900 to 1914 an energetic and well-connected movement dedicated to the implementation of mandatory military service. The most significant of its components was the National Service League, led by the septuagenarian Field-Marshal Lord Roberts. The movement was fostered by the fear and sense of failure resulting from the Boer War. While it failed in its goal of peacetime conscription, the league prepared …
