Newhailes House on the outskirts of Edinburgh is surrounded by an 18th-century designed landscape which encapsulates the philosophical and aesthetic concerns of the Scottish Enlightenment. Through the use of excavation and building surveys this paper examines the surviving elements of this landscape and discusses how their design and function can be interpreted as tools to negotiate, create and sustain social structures

East Africa has been part of an Indian Ocean trading network connecting it with the Arab world since at least the eighth century CE. This trade included the trafficking of humans. A number of sites associated with slave trading in East Africa are open to public display while some are also incorporated into local folklore. Cist behind the Binns: The excavation of an Iron Age cist burial at the House of the Binns, West Lothian
During a routine archaeological monitoring visit to the National Trust for Scotland (NTS) property at the House of the Binns in August 2013, human bone was discovered eroding from a small bedrock quarry face. Following investigation by the NTS Archaeology Team this was identified as the remains of two male skeletons from the first centuries BC/AD. Both were buried within a single stone cist, with the remains of one individual (30–50 years old) cl…
Gladstone’s Land: The changing face of Edinburgh’s Royal Mile
This paper presents the results of recent archaeological research into the building known as Gladstone’s Land on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile. The aim of the research was to examine to what extent historical fabric had survived in light of extensive historical intervention. The building is a surviving example of Edinburgh’s Old Town urban architecture, which is characterized by tall structures with a shop front and densely occupied residential spaces. …

This note describes an integrated marine survey that was undertaken at the historic port and waterfront of Zanzibar in 2005. The project involved an extensive marine geophysical survey of the seabed and identified a number of shipwrecks associated with the operation and history of the port.
