Decolonizing Language Resources in the Human-Machine Era: A Critical Reflection on Universalist Ideologies and Language Technologies
This essay engages with the issue of future developing language technologies. In recent policy publications that attempt to predict and document an increasingly technologized linguistic future, we see a set of assumptions and presuppositions at work that we approach from a decolonial perspective. We use a sociolinguistically inspired lens of critical engagement with colonialist premises underlying these ideologies and beliefs in universal technol…
“The Rest of my Childhood was Lost”: Canadian Children and Adolescents’ Experiences Navigating Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Children and adolescents with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) face significant and unique challenges related to their condition. The aim of this study was to better understand some of these challenges, and to explore how Canadian youth respond to them. We interviewed 25 pediatric patients with IBD, ranging in age from 10–17, to find out about their illness experiences. Using a thematic analysis, we discerned three themes: challenges related to d…
State of the art: Current methodological innovations in sociophonetics
Innovation is a buzzword at many levels of society, business and science. We as researchers are constantly urged to focus on the new and the ground-breaking, and on moving forward to new frontiers, enabling exploration of new knowledge in new combinations and from new perspectives. This as is true of sociophonetics, the study of socially grounded phonetic variation, as it is of any discipline. Technological breakthroughs and boundary-crossings ha…

A comparison of three speaker-intrinsic vowel formant frequency normalization algorithms for sociophonetics
This article evaluates a speaker-intrinsic vowel formant frequency normalization algorithm initially proposed in Watt & Fabricius (2002). We compare how well this routine, known as the S -centroid procedure, performs as a sociophonetic research tool in three ways: reducing variance in area ratios of vowel spaces (by attempting to equalize vowel space areas); improving overlap of vowel polygons; and reproducing relative positions of vowel means wi…

Variation and change in the trap and strut vowels of RP: A Real Time Comparison of Five Acoustic Data Sets
The present study examines evidence for change in real time within the short vowel subsystem of the RP accent of English over the course of the twentieth century. It compares plots of average formant positions for the short vowels, stemming from several data corpora. It furthermore describes a change over time in the juxtaposition of the trap and strut vowels as captured in the calculated angle and distance between the two, using trap as a fixed …

Weak vowels in modern RP: An acoustic study of happ y -tensing and kit /schwa shift
Several changes in consonant and vowel pronunciations in younger generations of native speakers of Received Pronunciation (RP) are currently the object of research interest. In order to further an empirically grounded description of changes in RP, the present study examines variation in weak vowels. Patterns of variation in word-final open weak syllables (happ y , cit y ) as well as in past and present/plural suffixes (wait ed , chang es ) are in…
