  • Optimising small island developing states and overseas countries and territories classification for comparative public health research

Open Access•Dorothee Katharina Roβkamp, Anita Huis et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2025

Aiming to investigate small island resilience in public health emergencies, we found existing classifications of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) failed to provide a homogeneous group suitable for comparative studies. While SIDS classifications highlight small states’ challenges globally, they include countries with vast differences in geography, population, economy and health systems, making them ineffective for studying public health emerg…

  • Contexts motivating protective behaviours related to Aedes-borne infectious diseases in Curaçao

    Open Access•Vaitiare I C Mulderij-Jansen, Vaitiare Mulderij-Jansen et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

This study used the HBM to explain individual changes in HSB concerning ABIDs prevention and control in Curaçao. We can conclude that the perceived threat (perceived susceptibility and severity) and perceived barriers played an essential role in changing HSB. Health professionals must consider these two concepts' implications when designing a bottom-up approach for ABIDs control; otherwise, community participation will remain minimal

Epidemics of dengue, chikungunya, and Zika have been threatening the Caribbean. Since risk communication (RC) plays a fundamental role in preventing and controlling diseases understanding how RC works is essential for enabling risk-reducing behavior. This multimethod qualitative study compares news reports with local's and health professional's perspectives, currently lacking in RC research. It was found that RC strategies were obstructed by a la…

  • Sars-CoV-2 outbreak on the Caribbean islands of the Dutch Kingdom

Open Access•Priscilla Maria, Lung Jeung et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Panamericana de Salud…•2020

As the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic progresses, countries are depending on one another to acquire knowledge regarding effective measures to contain the virus. Public health measures to suppress transmissions have proven successful in Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Implementing and adhering to these interventions is challenging, with governments struggling to find a balance between necessary mitigation an…

  • High incidence of intermittent care in HIV-1-infected patients in Curaçao before and after starting cART

Hillegonda S Hermanides, Rebecca Holman et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2013

Retention in care is one of the major challenges to scaling up and maximizing the effectiveness of combination antiretroviral therapy (cART). High attrition rates have been reported in the Caribbean region, varying from 6% to 23%. We studied the incidence of and risk factors for intermittent care in a cohort of adult HIV-1-positive patients, who entered into care in Curaçao between January 2005 and July 2009. A total of 214 therapy-naïve HIV-1-in…
