  • Introduction: Teaching Qualitative Methods in Undergraduate Education

    Open Access•Shamira Gelbman, Sebastian Karcher•ARTICLE•PS Political Science & Politics•2026•References: 3

This article introduces a symposium on teaching qualitative research methods to undergraduate students. Qualitative methods have an important role in both the discipline and the professional development of students but do not occupy a commensurate space in research pedagogy. This is due in part to the lack of resources for effectively teaching qualitative methods—a lack this symposium seeks to address. We identify four common themes in the four s…

  • Notes from the Editors: Increasing Qualitative Submissions

Open Access•Andrew Bennett, Colin Elman et al.•ARTICLE•American Political Science Review•2022•References: 4

One of the main goals of our editorial team when we became editors of the American Political Science Review was to increase the substantive , methodological , and representational diversity of the APSR while continuing to publish excellent work. As we explained in our 2019 Vision Statement, we seek to broaden the range of research topics that are published in the journal and to diversify the subfields, geographic foci, and methodological approach…

  • Qualitative Data Sharing: Participant Understanding, Motivation, and Consent

    Open Access•Alicia Vandevusse, Jennifer Mueller et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Health Research•2022•Cited by: 4•References: 34

Expectations to share data underlying studies are increasing, but research on how participants, particularly those in qualitative research, respond to requests for data sharing is limited. We studied research participants' willingness to, understanding of, and motivations for data sharing. As part of a larger qualitative study on abortion reporting, we conducted interviews with 64 cisgender women in two states in early 2020 and asked for consent …

  • Assessing the Causes of Capital Account Liberalization: How Measurement Matters1

    Open Access•Sebastian Karcher, David A Steinberg•ARTICLE•International Studies Quarterly•2013•Cited by: 31•References: 33

Why do countries open their economies to global capital markets? A number of recent articles have found that two types of factors encourage politicians to liberalize their capital accounts: strong macroeconomic fundamentals and political pressure from proponents of open capital markets. However, these conclusions need to be re-evaluated because the most commonly used measure of capital account openness, Chinn and Ito's (2002) Kaopen index, suffer…

  • Complementarities and continuities in the political economy of labour markets in Latin America

    Ben Ross Schneider, Sebastian Karcher•ARTICLE•Socio-Economic Review•2010•Cited by: 15•References: 40

In a comparative institutional or 'variety of capitalism' perspective, the distinctive traits of labor markets in Latin America differ in most respects from labor markets in developed countries. Moreover, there are strong economic complementarities among five core features of labor markets in Latin America: low skill levels, high labor regulation, short job tenure, a large informal sector, and small, politicized unions that lack plant level repres…
