Family Caregiver Experience of Resistance to Care: Occurrence Patterns, Context, and Impact on Caregiver
Although the extant literature identifies resistance to care (RTC) as one of the most frequently reported and impactful caregiver (CG) stressors, typical studies that rely on quantitative measures of RTC do not fully explain how and why RTC negatively influences CGs' well-being. As such, it is difficult to develop specific intervention strategies to support CGs in dealing with RTC. Informed by existing literature and tenets from Stress Theory, th…
Family-Focused Preventive Interventions With Cancer Cosurvivors: A Call to Action
Health promotion and preventive action in the context of public health interventions for highly prevalent, long-term conditions such as cancer are rarely geared toward the family as a whole. Yet family members, as cancer cosurvivors, must manage their own substantial stress and multiple caregiving responsibilities and often constitute a critical nexus between individual patients and clinicians. We drew on 2 examples of cancer cosurvivorship from …

Sociocontextual Circumstances in Daily Stress Reactivity Among Caregivers for Elder Relatives
Using a daily diary design, we examined whether emotional and physical reactivity in the face of care-related stressors is more intense for caregivers (CGs) living with lower levels of available socioemotional support and higher numbers of extrinsic stressors. Sixty-three CGs reported their experiences based on the past 24 hr (i.e., number of caregiving tasks, care recipient problem behaviors, family disagreements regarding care, depressive sympt…
Future Money-Related Worries Among Adolescents After Divorce
The present research examined adolescents’ views of their future with respect to money and financial well-being via an open-ended question and inductive content analysis. The participants were adolescents ( N = 255) whose parents were divorced between 5 and 24 months at the time of data collection. The most common worries pertained to (a) being poor/struggling for the necessities of life, (b) attaining/maintaining a high quality of life, (c) job-…
Examining Emerging-Adults' and Parents' Expectations about Autonomy During the Transition to College
Our research goals were to document levels and examine the potential discrepancies of emerging-adults' and parents' expectations for autonomous behavior during the transition to college. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected from 204 incoming college freshmen ( n = 150 females, n = 54 males) and 226 parents ( n = 173 mothers, n = 53 fathers) before the transition to college. Questions based on the emotional and functional items on the …
A Look at Hopes and Worries About Marriage: The Views of Adolescents Following a Parental Divorce
The present study examined hopes and worries about marriage, following a parental divorce, among a sample of 238 adolescents (age 11-17). The current study improves upon existing research by obtaining a more representative sample of adolescents who had experienced a parental divorce within the past two years, utilizing open-ended questions, and focusing on adolescents' attitudes about their own future marriages (rather than marriage in general). …

Growing up Faster: Post-Divorce Catalysts in the Mother-Adolescent Relationship
Adding to the literature on post-divorce parent-adolescent relationships and applying the symbolic interactionist notion of reflective appraisal, we hypothesized that being called on by one's mother for emotional assistance and being exposed to maternal concerns/worries (sensitive maternal disclosures) would be related to adolescents' feeling older than their same-aged peers (high subjective age) and engaging in greater socializing/dating. We als…
Post-Divorce Interparental Conflict and Adolescents' Attitudes About Marriage: The Influence of Maternal Disclosures and Adolescent Gender
The present study examined the relationship between post-divorce interparental conflict and adolescent attitudes about marriage, as well as how maternal disclosures and adolescent gender may moderate that relationship. Respondents were 194 mother-adolescent pairs, recruited from divorce records in central and southern Arizona, with the age of the adolescents ranging from 11 to 17 years (M = 14 years, 5 months; SD = 21 months). Findings indicate t…
Mothers Re-Partnering After Divorce: Diverging Perceptions of Mothers and Adolescents
Using a “divergent realities” approach, the present study compared mothers' and adolescents' perceptions of the mothers' postdivorce re-partnering (i.e., remarriage, cohabitation, or dating) as it relates to the adolescents' lives (N = 83 dyads). Mothers' and adolescents' perceptions were elicited via open-ended questionnaire items. Qualitative content analysis of the written responses revealed discrepant views for 47 dyads and agreement for 36 d…
