  • Puruṣa: Offer, kosmos, menneske

    Open Access•Mikael Aktor•ARTICLE•Religionsvidenskabeligt Tidsskrift•2022•References: 4

Because of the problematic source situation in the pre-Christian North, it is often necessary to make us of what Jens Peter Schjødt has termed genetic comparisons, in order to better ones understanding of the religious tradition. In this article, one such historically related myth about the creation of the world through a ritual process in which an anthropomorphic being if transformed into the cosmos through an act of sacrifice, is anlalysed. Thi…

  • Respect Pollution: Urenhed og renselse i hinduismens rituelle personhierarki

    Open Access•Mikael Aktor•ARTICLE•Religionsvidenskabeligt Tidsskrift•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 2

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The American anthropologist Edward B. Harper coined the concept ‘respect pollution’ for a practice where a person shows respect towards another person at a higher level in the Hindu ritual hierarchy by doing something in relation to the latter that would normally be regarded as involving impurity and pollution. That could be touching someone’s feet or foot wear, eating the lefto-vers of others, or getting in physical contact wit…

  • Louis Dumont: Verdensforsagelse, hierarki og renhed

    Open Access•Mikael Aktor•ARTICLE•Religionsvidenskabeligt Tidsskrift•2018•References: 2

English Abstract: This brief article reviews two main contributions by the French sociologist Louis Dumont, his essay “World Renunciation in Indian Religions” and his major work on the Indian caste system, Homo Hierarchicus. Some of the critique of Dumont’s ideas about renunciation, hierarchy and purity is discussed with special focus on three points: (1) The creative role of renunciation in the history of Hinduism; (2) the Indian caste system as…

  • Fra Jagannātha til juggernaut: Billedkult og kristen mission ved den store vognprocession i Puri

    Open Access•Mikael Aktor•ARTICLE•Religionsvidenskabeligt Tidsskrift•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 2

English abstract: The Car Festival in Puri, Odisha, is one of the world’s largest religious processions. About one million pilgrims follow the three god-siblings, Jagannātha, Subhadrā and Balabhadra, each seated in their own gigantic procession chariot pulled by hundreds of pilgrims, on their journey from the main Jagannātha temple to the Guṇḍicā temple three kilometers away. The perception of this procession festival by the British missionaries …

  • The Hindupañcāyatanapūjāin the aniconism spectrum

    Mikael Aktor•ARTICLE•Religion•2017•Cited by: 3•References: 11

The Hindu pañcāyatanapūjā is the worship of five deities that can be in the form of five stones collected from various locations in South Asia. Each of these stones has visual properties which form points of reference to the iconography of the same gods’ anthropomorphic forms. And although the ritual use of these five stones is a clear example of an aniconic cult, their worship evokes anthropopathic properties and, depending on the specific conte…

  • Askese som social/politisk mobilisering: Joseph Alters bog om Gandhi, Gandhi’s Body

    Open Access•Mikael Aktor•ARTICLE•Religionsvidenskabeligt Tidsskrift•2016•References: 1

There are several historical examples of asceticism as a means to social and political mobilization. Gandhi’s use of fasts and sexual abstinence in the larger fight for national independence is a well-known recent example. Joseph Alter’s book, Gandhi’s Body: Sex, Diet, and the Politics of Nationalism from 2000 is a relevant source for such considerations. Alter describes Gandhi’s personal experiments with public health, fast, food, sexual abstine…

  • Asymmetrical Religious Commitments? Religious Practice, Identity, and Self-Presentation among Western Scholars of Hinduism and Buddhism

    Mikael Aktor•ARTICLE•Numen•2015•References: 12

The starting point of this article is the observation that more scholars of Buddhism seem to be engaged in Buddhist practices than their colleagues in the study of Hinduism are engaged in Hindu practices. It aims to examine this observation more closely and discuss the involved problematics in a more general perspective of the scholar’s responsibilities in relation to the public. The evidence examined consists partly of different types of public …

    Open Access•Mikael Aktor•ARTICLE•Religionsvidenskabeligt Tidsskrift•1997

Purity, Ritual and Society According to Mary Douglas: A problematization inspired by some recent post-structuralist critiques”. Mary Douglas’ two pioneering books, Purity and Danger and Natural Symbols, were together a major break-through in the study of religions. Today, when post-structuralist voices are heard more and more clearly, also in this discipline, it is, however, time for a rethinking of her hypotheses. The present article attempts pa…

  • Social vrangorden i klassisk bramisk samfundslære

    Open Access•Mikael Aktor•ARTICLE•Religionsvidenskabeligt Tidsskrift•1994

This article is an investigation of the concept of varnasamkara, the mixing of the four orders of the classical Indian social hierarchy. The concept is described as both a fictive 'explanation' of the origin of those tribal castes, which gradually were included in the social system, and as a reflection of an actual practice of sexual relations across the barriers of the orders. Particularly the pratiloma-relations, the hypogamous relations betwee…

  • Religiøs argumentation som religionsfænomenologisk forskningsområde

    Open Access•Mikael Aktor•ARTICLE•Religionsvidenskabeligt Tidsskrift•1992

This article is a reflection on the specific character of religious assertations and religious arguments. The basic point of view is that these religious practices should not be investigated as isolated religious phenomena sui generis, but on the contrary, that they are conditioned by and derived from common linguistic and epistemological practices that relate to the concrete material world. Religious assertations join together finction and descr…
