Marshall Joseph Becker (1938-2024)
Religious practices and territories in the socio-political network of Tikal (600 BCE-1150 CE)
The city of Tikal played a pre-eminent role in the Central Lowlands of the Maya area from the beginning of the Classic period until the fall of its dynasty (250-after 869 CE). At the heart of a heterarchical network of city-states, it established itself as a regional capital from the start of the Early Classic period, then as a key actor in the political, cultural, artistic, and commercial spheres. As a major religious center, Tikal’s influence o…

Hattula Moholy-Nagy (1933-2024)
Characterizing and Classifying Mayan Ritual Deposits
Initiated almost a century ago, the study of Mayan ritual deposits has undergone a gradual genesis, which until recently distinguished only caches and burials, while all cases that didn’t fit neatly into these two categories were classified as “problematical deposits”. Over the past decades, thanks to technical advances and a better understanding of the contexts, new types of rituals have been identified, such as secondary burials, termination de…
Cache Complexes in Tikal, Petén, Guatemala (800 BC-AD 950)
For almost a century, caches have been regular discoveries at most Preclassic and Classic Maya sites (ca. 800 BC-AD 950). As early as the 1960s, William Coe noticed a number of recurring patterns (Tikal Report No. 27A). Fifty years after the end of the Tikal Project's excavations, it was nonetheless necessary to review the data from all the successive projects to identify new deposits and reanalyze contexts deemed problematic. As a result, 343 ca…
Loten H. Stanley, Miscellaneous Investigations in Central Tikal
