  • Work and the Welfare State

Vicki Lens, Michael Adler et al.•BOOK•Work and the Welfare State•2013•Citada por: 26

Work and the Welfare State places street-level organizations at the analytic center of welfare state politics, policy and management. This volume offers a critical examination of efforts to change the welfare state to a workfare state by looking at on-the-ground issues in six countries: the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands.

  • Tension points in real social science

Open Access•Bent Flyvbjerg, Todd Landman et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Sociology•2013•Citada por: 4•Referências: 4

Social science today often contents itself with trying to explain particular events in terms of general models without understanding those events as experienced by the people being studied and without providing findings that might help people address the problems they are experiencing. It can be argued that the recent development of social science has focused too much on its own 'evidence--inference methodological core' and has lost sight of what …

  • Real Social Science

    Open Access•F Schram, A W Frank et al.•BOOK•Real Social Science•2012

Real Social Science presents a new, hands-on approach to social inquiry. The theoretical and methodological ideas behind the book, inspired by Aristotelian phronesis, represent an original perspective within the social sciences, and this volume gives readers for the first time a set of studies exemplifying what applied phronesis looks like in practice. Back in the mid-1980s, anti-war activists hit upon a simple slogan for rallying opposition against efforts to overthrow the Sandinista government of Nicaragua: U.S. out of Central America. But, one day as I was driving down the highway, a car raced by with a bumper sticker that took the issue to a new level: U.S. out of NORTH AMERICA! Now, that was a political statement to make you think. The driver of the car looked neither a political theorist …

Thomas P Vartanian, Thomas Vartanian et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sociology & Social…•1999•Citada por: 1

The claim is often made that welfare recipients move to states where benefits are more readily available in more generous amounts. To test that claim, this study uses data on state General Assistance (GA) programs, as well as data on single men from the Public Use Microdata Set of the 1990 U.S. Census. We find only slight evidence that men who lack access to GA seek it elsewhere, and overall we find that the availability of GA has no more than a …
