Crafting the voice of God: Ceramic waylla kepa shell horn technology in the Andes
This paper addresses the enchainment of skills and interactions for the production of ceramic shell horns, and the meaning of these musical instruments whose sounds have shaped the ritual soundscapes of the central Andes since the boom in public architecture in the second millennium BC (early Formative Period c. 3800–3300 BP). Linguistic and ethnohistoric reviews shed light on performance practices and meanings at the time of conquest. Contextual…
What is that Pigment? Surface Analysis of Early Ceramics from Kuntur Wasi, Andes of Peru, by Way of Raman Microscopy and Portable X-Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy
Preliminary analyses using Raman microscopy and portable X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (pXRF) were conducted on 21 ceramic fragments to assess the composition of the pigments used by the ancient potters producing for the ceremonial center of Kuntur Wasi (950-50 BC), Department of Cajamarca, in the northern Peruvian highlands. The chemical and mineral analyses evidenced the manipulation of iron oxides to provide for most of the surface colors an…
Ceramic Diversity in Chavín De Huantar, Peru
Ceramic diversity in the ceremonial center of Chavín de Huantar in the Peruvian highlands is assessed by neutron activation analysis, petrography, and stylistic analysis. These analyses lead to a new interpretation of ceramic production in Chavín between ca. 850 and 200 B.C. Several compositional groups with very different mineralogical paste types are identified. More than 30 percent of the ceramics are nonlocal. Most of these are bottles and fi…
Shashal o no shashal?

Ceramic Production in San Marcos Acteopan, Puebla, Mexico
This article presents a study of ceramic production in San Marcos Acteopan, a small village in the southern part of the state of Puebla, Mexico. Field observation and interviews with the families of two potters document the different steps of the ceramic production process. The approach is ethnographic and aims at better understanding ancient ceramic production. Special emphasis is given to raw material acquisition and paste preparation to provid…

From Clay to Pots: A Petrographical Analysis of Ceramic Production in the Callejón de Huaylas, North-Central Andes, Peru
At the cross-roads of ethnoarchaeology and ceramic studies, this article investigates the compositional relationship between the different constituents of ceramic paste. The question related to provenance and technical studies is how one can recognize the different raw materials in the ceramic, when both are soils. The context of study is the ceramic production of three potters of the Callejón de Huaylas in the Peruvian Andes. Detailed petrograph…
