Sago and Oil Palm Forests
The study explores the narrative of oil palm expansion in the Marind-Anim area, where the land and its natural surroundings are not empty spaces without meaning but an eternal identity that is preserved because it tells the historical relationship between local people and their ancestors. Owning land, even the smallest parcel, can enhance self-esteem and social security. This study traces the narrative of oil palm expansion in the Marind-Anim are…

The Commons in a Glocal World
This volume focuses on how, in Europe, the debate on the commons is discussed in regard to historical and contemporary dimensions, critically referencing the work of Elinor Ostrom. It also explores from the perspective of new institutional political ecology (NIPE) how Europe directly and indirectly affected and affects the commons globally. Most of the research on the management of commons pool resources is limited to dealing with one of two topi…

Hot Money and War Debts
In this analysis of monetary and debt practices among the Rejang from Lebong in Sumatra, Indonesia, I compare the results of my own research with examples of monetary practices from elsewhere in the Malay archipelago and from Kenya. Phenomena like 'hot money,' 'war-debts,' ethnically exclusive credit circles, and gender-specific monetary practices reveal an underlying differentiation in notions of debt. Not all kinds of debt are expected to be re…
