It shows how practices denoted by the terms perishut (lit. “separation”) and hitbodedut (lit. “solitude”) serve as preparatory steps that …

  • “Gathering the Dispersed of Israel”

Open Access•Patricia Barthalow Koch, Patrick Benjamin Koch•ARTICLE•Harvard Theological Review•2021

This article traces the evolution of a kabbalistic prayer supplication that was designed to purify male Jews from pollution caused by improper seminal emission. In doing so, it focuses on the metaphysical rationale behind it, its function, and its metamorphosis from a highly technical practice into a mainstream devotional practice. It addresses how notions of sexual pollution ( qeri ) were contextualized in Lurianic Kabbalah and how they were lat…

Patricia Barthalow Koch•ARTICLE•Journal of Jewish Studies•2020

The article examines R. Shabbetai ben Joseph Meshorer Bass's (1641-1718) bibliographical project of organizing the genre nowadays known as sifrut ha-musar or 'Jewish ethical literature'. By exploring Bass's modus operandi, it highlights both the diverse literary expressions conveying the conception of musar and the entanglement of the emic and etic frameworks - that is, perspectives 'from within' and 'from without'. Based on an analysis of Siftei…

Patricia Barthalow Koch, Patrick Benjamin Koch•ARTICLE•The Jewish Quarterly Review•2019

In one of his letters sent from Safed to Poland, R. Shlomo Shlomel Meinstral of Dresnitz reports the rather exceptional penitential exercises of Avraham ben Eliezer ha-Levi Berukhim (1515–93). • Women's sexual desire

Jill M Wood, Patricia Barthalow Koch et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•2006•Cited by: 9•References: 55

This paper offers a critical feminist analysis of the biomedical conceptualization of women's sexual desire. The five major features of the biomedical model of female sexual desire examined and critiqued are: 1) use of the male model as the standard, 2) use of a linear model of sexual response, 3) biological reductionism, 4) depoliticalization, and 5) medicalization of variation. A "New View", an alternative to the biomedical model, is offered fo…

  • Facing the Unknown

    Patricia Barthalow Koch, Phyllis Kernoff Mansfield•ARTICLE•Women & Therapy•2004•References: 2

Many midlife women are uncertain about the indicators of menopause and how to negotiate the menopausal transition. They need accurate information regarding perimenopause and menopause. To do this, they need to learn how to access and mobilize the informational, emotional, and instrumental support that t…
