Multilevel Quality Indicators: Methodology and Monte Carlo Evidence
BACKGROUND: Quality indicators are frequently used to assess the performance of health care providers, in particular hospitals. Established approaches to the design of such indicators are subject to distortions due to indirect standardization and high variance of estimators. Indicators for geographical regions are rarely considered. OBJECTIVES: To develop and evaluate a methodology of multilevel quality indicators (MQIs) for both health care prov…
The effects of economic development on democratic institutions and repression in non-democratic regimes: Theory and evidence
This paper provides a theoretical rationale for the simultaneous use of repression and democratic institutions by a non-democratic government, as is often observed in reality. We find that economic development has different impacts on the levels of repression and democracy, depending on whether it appears in the form of rises in income or in education: A higher income level reduces democracy, whereas more education leads to both more democracy an…
Health-related quality of life in elderly, multimorbid individuals with and without depression and/or mild cognitive impairment using a telemonitoring application
Depression and/or MCI are negatively associated with the HRQoL of elderly, multimorbid people using a TMA. Engagement of individuals with vital data measurements via a TMA may increase their mental HRQoL. Mentally impaired people should be closely involved as co-designers and experts in development processes of TMAs to benefit from tailored solutions. An individual's increased mental HRQoL can be a decisive factor in their engagement with a GP tr…
Democracy and the Transnational Dimensions of Low-Level Conflict and State Repression
This paper examines the transnational dimensions of low-level conflict and state repression. In this regard, special emphasis is placed on the role of political regimes. Drawing on a simple model, we argue that democracy has opposing effects on conflict intensity. On one hand, democracy satisfies demand for political participation and thus reduces conflict potential, while, on the other hand, we highlight that domestic democracy may spur dissatis…
Political regimes and publicly provided goods: Why democracy needs development
Reciprocity
Reciprocity refers to a principle according to which the recipient of a gift is obliged to return it in order to maintain social balance. Besides the economic features, reciprocity therefore implies social factors and involves ideas of mutual obligation, debt, and harmony. By demonstrating that gift exchange encompasses the key elements of giving, receiving, and reciprocating, Marcel Mauss influenced all later anthropological theories of exchange…
Redistribution
Redistribution is an economic arrangement whereby goods are transferred to a political center in order to be redistributed among the population later. Pooled goods may either be redistributed among parts of the population that are not directly involved in their production or given back to the actual producers. Redistribution requires economic specialization and surplus production as well as political centricity; it contributes to the maintenance …

Striving for modesty; Fundamentals of the religion and social organization of the Makassarese Patuntung
A source-critical or tradition-historical approach to the Genesis Apocryphon will quite justifiably emphasize the features of the Apocryphon that point toward what can be described as its lack of compositional unity. There exists, however, a level on which the Apocryphon can be shown to be a whole; that is its narrative unity. The latter is the result of the ways in which the final author/composer organized and manipulated the sources and traditi…
