  • A Politics of Proxy Reading

    L Price•ARTICLE•differences•2026

This essay asks why nineteenth-century British children's fiction locates illiteracy in the West Indies. I compare abolitionists’ accusation that planters mistake the bodily work of looking at books for the mental effort of understanding them with post-Emancipation debates about the balance of power between a woman who reads aloud and a man who listens. Finally, I ask how that dyad changes once proxy reading becomes confined to two scenarios: an …

  • How to Do Things with Books in Victorian Britain

Open Access•L Price•BOOK•How to do things with books in…•2012

This book asks how our culture came to frown on using books for any purpose other than reading. When did the coffee-table book become an object of scorn? Why did law courts forbid witnesses to kiss the Bible? What made Victorian cartoonists mock commuters who hid behind the newspaper, ladies who matched their books' binding to their dress, and servants who reduced newspapers to fish n' chips wrap? Shedding new light on novels by Thackeray, Dicken…

The ambition of this article is to wrest attention away from the fraction of any book's life cycle spent in the hands of readers and toward, instead, the whole spectrum of social practices for which printed matter provides a prompt. It asks, how accounts of print culture would look if narrated from the point of view not of human readers and users, but of the book. Turning to the nineteenth-century genre of "it-narrative"-which traces the travel o…

  • Reader's Block: Response

    L Price•ARTICLE•Victorian Studies•2004•References: 5

B n y-the-by, that very word, Reading, in its critical use, always charms me. An actress's Reading of a chambermaid, a dancer's Reading of a hornpipe, a singer's Reading of a song, a marine painter's Reading of the sea, the kettle-drum's Reading of an instrumental passage, are phrases ever youthful and delightful (Dickens, Our Mutual Friend 605). Thus Eugene Wrayburn, in a novel that obsessively plays the symbolic value of literacy off against th…
