On sait qu'en 1716-1717, après deux ans environ d'espionnage industriel en Italie, et plus précisément au Piémont, John Lombe introduisit en Angleterre les machines à organsiner, c'est-à-dire des machines pour renvider, filer et mouliner la soie. Les capitaux nécessaires pour bâtir l'usine - ce bâtiment avait 500 pieds de long, 551⁄2 de haut et 36 de large - furent fournis par son frère Thomas, seul titulaire du privilège pour une durée de quator…
