Aventuras con facturas
Cholula, Puebla, Mexico, July 2023 1. This is a story of how the smallest actions and interactions in our daily lives are enmeshed in the largest systems that channel the social world's energies—systems that have their logic but that, at various junctures, just might be self-defeating. Ask for the bill at the end of a restaurant meal, call an Uber, grumble with a friend about the bean counters who are complicating your life unnecessarily, try to …
Ukraine is here, the maps stay the same. On the ethics of framing an analysis
With Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the world in which New Area Studies (NAS) were born has shifted, and this leaves us with a number of questions on how to move on. In this post-2/24 world, we are back to the past of raw military power, colonial conquest and destabilized international borders. And because the invasion is, itself, explicitly dealing with Ukraine and its borderlands as constructs of history and of politics – as illegitimate constru…

Friends Again? Canada, Obama, and the Big Picture
For all the euphoria that marked Canadians' reaction to Barack Obama's accession to the U.S. presidency, the Canada–U.S. relationship promises to remain complicated. To make sense of the situation, a sharp distinction must be made between public opinion and the policy orientations of governments. Thus, throughout the Bush years, bilateral relations in key policy areas remained close—and even grew closer—at the same time that hostility of Canadian…
National, Public/Private, Human
This paper seeks to problematize the conceptual and political relationships between what are considered different kinds of security—national, public/private, and human—and other concepts such as human rights and the rule of law. A concern with public security is often associated with conservative political forces—the “law and order” outlook; the reciprocal concern with human rights tends, for its part, to be associated with the left. In the curre…
Canadians in Trouble Abroad
This article concerns itself with what happens to the universal/particular character of citizenship in the context of North American regionalization. It takes as a starting point several incidents where Canadian citizens have called on their government to help them through crisis situations abroad, and then taken it to task for not helping enough. The cases analysed involve Canadian tourists in Mexico who died violently and whose families have us…
Asymmetrical Hybridities
The purpose of this ethnographic comparative study of the Jeux de l’Acadie, the Jeux\nfranco-ontariens and the Alberta Francophone Games is to explore further how minority youth\nidentities are produced and manifested in Canada’s francophonies. Through interviews, drawings\nand questionnaires adolescents express and give meaning to their francophoneness in the context\nof the Games. The analysis reveals that francophone identities are reproduced …
Urban Natives and the Nation

Government Can Do Whatever It Wants”

The Genesis of American Capitalism
We usually think that we know what 'the state' is, even when we embark on a theoretical quest for it. Somehow, the state is closely associated with Government - including bureaucracy and army. Or we sometimes think of it differently, in terms of city-state or nation-state. I had the first notion in mind when I started to research the socioeconomic context of the making of the U.S. constitution. But the historical research forced me to face the va…
