  • India Ukre Giya: Loss and Change in Light of and in the Shadows of War

Vikram Das, Martha A Cook et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Sindhi Studies•2023

The Thar Desert is located at the confluence of Sindh, Gujarat, and Rajasthan. The region’s folklore refers to the desert as a sea through which a cast of warriors, merchants, and adventurers traveled. Oral histories connect it with business and subsistence exchanges. These histories tell of crossing the Rann of Kutch (i.e., into India from Pakistan). They illustrate a strong connection between Tharparkar (in the Pakistani province of Sindh) and …

  • Coping Motivated Alcohol Use: The Role of Social Anxiety and Dissociation

    Martha A Cook, Matthew A Cook et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2021

Background: Social anxiety has been associated with higher rates of negative alcohol use consequences, and this relationship appears to be accounted for by coping drinking motives. Dissociation is commonly present in anxiety disorders, including social anxiety disorder, and may serve to unconsciously reduce negative emotions when more effortful coping strategies are not effective. Objectives: The present study examined whether the relationship be…

  • Organizations and Values in Human Services

    Thomas P Holland, Martha A Cook•ARTICLE•Social Service Review•1983•Cited by: 1•References: 4

A congruence framework, emphasizing person-environment fit, is utilized to examine selected dimensions of staff members' values and agency characteristics of structure and technology. Drawing from the fields of ethics and organizational theory, this article explores the interactions of individual staff, work group, and organizational levels of service delivery, with particular attention to their respective emphases on means versus ends of action …

  • Curricula and Coursework: A Surprise Ending to a Familiar Story

    Karl L Alexander, Martha A Cook•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•1982•Cited by: 43•References: 3

Previous research on high school tracking has neglected students' course enrollments and students' course grades as possible selection criteria for curriculum assignments and as possible mechanisms whereby track membership exercises its influence on school outcomes. The present study extends the Alexander, Cook, and McDill (1978) curriculum process model to include detailed information on students' coursework patterns over the junior high school …

  • Measure for Measure: On the Use of Endogenous Ability Data in School-Process Research

    Karl L Alexander, Aaron M Pallas et al.•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•1981•Cited by: 7•References: 3

The appropriate use of ability test performance in evaluating schools has been a subject of considerable debate. The present study evaluates three strategies for controlling input-level ability differences in such research: longitudinal, predetermined ability measures; cross-sectional, endogenous ability measures; and SES measures as proxies for ability. In general, endogenous measures of ability behave much like predetermined measures, while SES…

  • Design and Substance in Educational Research: Adolescent Attainments, A Case in Point

    Martha A Cook, Karl L Alexander•ARTICLE•Sociology of Education•1980•Cited by: 1

Much non-experimental educational research has relied upon cross-sectional designs, while many of the theories which motivate such inquiry imply some sort of developmental sequencing of the relationships of interest. This paper explores the practical implications of this disjuncture between perspective and practice by comparing the conclusions reached in the estimation of a recursive school process model of educational goal formation across sever…

  • The Motivational Relevance of Educational Plans: Questioning the Conventional Wisdom

    Karl L Alexander, Martha A Cook•ARTICLE•Social Psychology Quarterly•1979•Cited by: 25

Employing two complementary data sets, the National Longitudinal Study of the High School Class of 1972 and the Study of Academic Prediction and Growth, we question the conventional interpretation of educational plans as motives, and thereby as determinants of educational attainment. We find that when questioned about their educational plans: (1) perhaps as many as 20% of youth supply extemporaneous responses; (2) another 20% report goals of quit…
