    Open Access•Astrid Tuisk•ARTICLE•Mäetagused•2024

Even though Estonia underwent significant societal changes in the 20th century, Estonian children played exciting running and hiding games both at the beginning and end of the century. The game repertoire evolved throughout these hundred years, with some running and hiding games being introduced, and others forgotten. My article focuses on the points of contact between Estonian games and those of neighbouring peoples, their distribution in Estoni…

  • Children as Consumers and Co-Creators of Cultural Products

    Open Access•Astrid Tuisk•ARTICLE•Folklore Electronic Journal of…•2022

This article gives a folkloristic insight into how cinema and films influenced Estonian children's culture in the late 1940s and in the 1950s. During this period, Estonia was occupied by the Soviet Union. Due to the lack of Soviet film production at that time, the cinemas began to show American, German, and other films of the 1930s, so-called foreign films or trophies. The post-World War II trophy films, which differed from Soviet films in both t…

(EKM ERA, DK 638, 24–25 < [...]

  • Meenutused nukkudest ja nendega mängimisest 1940.–1950. aastate Eestis

    Open Access•Astrid Tuisk•ARTICLE•Mäetagused•2019

This paper is based on the contributions submitted to the 2013 competition of folklore collection organised by the Estonian Folklore Archives of the Estonian Literary Museum, in which people born in the 1940s reminisced about the dolls of their childhood. The contributions to this competition were essentially childhood memories of a specific overarching topic, i.e., the topic of playing and games. In folklore studies, such single-topic descriptio…

  • We Have Nothing to Do with Them; They Live with Their Own Kind

    Open Access•Astrid Tuisk•ARTICLE•Folklore Electronic Journal of…•2014

This article explores the representations of Estonians, an ethnic group inhabiting West Siberian villages today, of their neighbouring Turkic peoples. I discuss the way that Siberian Estonians describe the representatives of these peoples and their contacts with the latter. The analysis is based on the interviews conducted within folklore collection fieldwork, in which a common question posed by the researcher was: What do you think/know about or…

In psychological observations of jokes, it is not so much the text of the joke than the function and place it has in the person reading, telling, or listening to the joke that interest is taken in. The influence of the joke on him and what touches that individual is dealt with. In the psychoanalytical approach, jokes are viewed as an expression of the subconscious. This approach explains jokes from the viewpoint of the human soul. In his work Der…
