Unveiling corruption: Exploring drivers of misconduct through the analysis of actual crime data
This study examines four potential drivers of corruption using a large administrative data set. These potential drivers have been previously tested and confirmed in experimental game studies or studies that used aggregated macro data. In contrast to these previous studies, the dataset used in this study comprises real individual data that classifies whether a public servant was dismissed due to corruption or not. The data were compiled from vario…

Seeing the City Digitally: Processing Urban Space and Time
The argument that many cities are now digitally mediated is an increasingly familiar one.The social, experiential and physical spaces of a city are more and more often designed, defined, navigated and experienced with digital data shared with platforms. But from its app icon to its interface to its advertising campaigns, every platform deploys a wide range of imagery, and most successful social media platforms are based on sharing images. This book…

Themed Section Introduction: Process‐Oriented Analysis
Process‐Oriented Sampling
Using the concepts of "duration" and "temporal patterns," this paper discusses how key steps during sampling change, if researchers take temporality seriously: When defining cases, scholars have to select a suitable temporal scale and reflect on possible changes of boundaries and properties of cases. When defining the population or field, researchers need to set an appropriate time frame and define periods within this time frame to be analyzed. W…

Multivariate Analysis
Multivariate analysis procedures are statistical analysis procedures used in quantitative research in order to analyze more than two variables. Multivariate analysis procedures can be classified in different ways. Two common ways are on what scale variables have to be measured in order to apply the model and what kind of theoretical model underlies the analytic procedure. Among the analytical problems multivariate analysis can address are (a) ide…
Variables
A variable is a superordinated attribute, characteristic, or finding that exists in at least two distinct subordinated categories (classes, groups, units of measurement, values). In social research, variables are used to assign single cases to categories – all cases assigned to the same category count as “the same” (concerning this variable), all cases allotted to different categories are regarded as being dissimilar. In order to ensure that all …

Effects of project-based research work on the career paths of young academics
This article focuses on the career chances and working conditions of early-stage researchers as an important category of knowledge workers within the academic system in Germany. We analyse the consequences of a crucial element of this system: the trend to work on externally-funded short-term research projects. Temporary employment in projects opens up opportunities for self-fulfilment and self-organisation, but also increases the risk of self-exp…

The Association between Norms and ActionsThe Case of Men's Participation in Housework
Gender and family researchers are often puzzled by the differences between gender norms and actual behaviour. For example, many previous studies have shown that since the 1970s, attitudes have changed toward more modern gender role beliefs. However, this is generally not reflected in behaviour, this being especially true for men's involvement in housework and care work. In this paper, we analyse to what extent gender norms correspond with men's p…

Map design aspects, route complexity, or social background? Factors influencing user satisfaction with indoor navigation maps
Indoor map design is still an uncharted territory. More often than not, existing architectural floor plans are used as visualization means that do not fulfill cartographic requirements. In collaboration between geoinformation science and sociology, we develop and investigate cartographic methods for effective route guidance in indoor environments. The baseline for our evaluation is the annual user studies with up to 1100 participants per year. Si…
Towards a Process-Oriented Methodology: Modern Social Science Research Methods and Norbert Elias's Figurational Sociology
This paper suggests that Norbert Elias's conception of process-oriented methodology consists of four stages: (1) explicating the researcher's theoretical and personal perspectivity; (2) reconstructing the figuration's rules and social structure using standardized data; (3) analysing the individual's placement within, perception of and ability to change the figuration, using open-ended data, and; (4) exploring the figuration's sociogenesis, using …

Urbanism as a Way of Life? Räumliche Variationen der Lebensführung in Deutschland / Urbanism as a Way of Life? Spatial Variations in Lifestyles in Germany

Reversing Rawls: Criteriology, contractualism and the primacy of the practical
In this paper, I offer an immanent critique of John Rawls’s theory of justice which seeks to show that Rawls’s understanding of his theory of justice as criteriological and contractarian is ultimately incompatible with his claim that the theory is grounded on the primacy of the practical. I agree with Michael Sandel’s observation that the Rawlsian theory of justice rests on substantive metaphysical and epistemological claims, in spite of Rawls’s …

Variables
Variables (indicators, items) are an important concept in methods of social research and epistemology. A variable is a superordinated attribute, characteristic, or finding that exists in at least two distinct subordinated categories (classes, groups, units of measurement, values). Cases (individuals) can differ – vary – on the variable concerning the category they belong to. Variables thus are used to classify cases. Very often, cases are persons…
Multivariate Analysis
One way to classify quantitative methods of social research is by the number of variables involved in statistical data analysis procedures. In univariate statistics, just one variable is of interest, while in bivariate statistics the relation between two variables is analyzed. Multivariate analysis involves, in the loose sense of the term, more than two variables and, in its strict sense, at least two dependent and two independent variables. With…

This study investigates what makes a man attractive to a woman in Germany, using a sample of 691 German citizens aged 18 to 92, collected in 2006, randomly sampled from resident registration lists in four representative regions. We test the idea that attractiveness is socially constructed and create measures of attractiveness using agreements of respondents to 16 statements. The three dimensions that emerged were breadwinning ability, relationshi…
