  • Urban Population Development in Germany (2000-2014)

    Open Access•Paul Gans•ARTICLE•Comparative Population Studies•2018•Cited by: 8•References: 1

The increase of the population of large German cities between 2000 and 2014 indicates a reurbanisation process in line with the concept of the “growing city”. This exploratory investigation will analyse the influence of internal and external migration on the population development of the German urban system by applying descriptive and statistical methods, going beyond the mere observation of selected cities. This paper shows that reurbanisation i…

  • Urban Population Change in Large Cities in Germany, 1980-94

    Open Access•Paul Gans•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•2000•Cited by: 5•References: 6

The populations of the large cities of the former Federal Republic of Germany (cities with at least 100 000 inhabitants) have been characterised by a continuing downward trend since the beginning of the 1980s. The number of inhabitants, which had already been decreasing during the 1970s, had registered a loss of 3.6 per cent by 1987. Subsequently, however, the trend reversed and, from 1988 to 1994, the population of the large cities in West Germa…

  • Population change in the suburbanized areas of the Federal Republic of Germany with special reference to Hamburg (1970-1987)

    Open Access•Paul Gans•ARTICLE•Espace populations sociétés•1991

The population development at the county level between 1970 and 1987 demonstrates convincingly the influence of suburbanization on spatial population shifts. The central cities in the metropolitan areas had the greatest population losses, whereas the counties in their environs registered gains of almost 50 % in some cases. These population changes originating in intraregional migration lose their dynamism in the 1980s, particularly in metropolita…

  • Differences in migration behaviour of Germans and Foreigners in selected cities of the federal republic of Germany
