  • Judging automation

    Open Access•Andrius Bielskis•ARTICLE•Capital & Class•2024•References: 22

This article discusses automation from the point of view of the intersection between Aristotle and Marx. First, it was Aristotle's notion of automatous - self-moving tools - that gave rise to the contemporary concept of automation. Marx's historical materialism is important as it puts the ongoing process of automation into a historical perspective. The development of self-moving machines should free us from the slavery of hard work, yet the legal…

  • Fyodor Dostoevsky’s “I am more than all” and Its Implications for the Political

    Open Access•Andrius Bielskis•ARTICLE•Politologija•2022

The paper examines Fyodor Dostoevsky’s ethical views – especially as exemplified in the dictum “each of us is guilty of everything against all, and I am more than all” – in light of their political implications. It focuses on two related issues. First, Emmanuel Levinas’s philosophical interpretation of Dostoevsky’s “I am more than the others” is contrasted with its interpretation by Sigmund Freud, who famously argued that Dostoevsky’s fixation o…

  • Three Perspectives on Marxism and Christianity (Translated by Andrius Bielskis)

    Open Access•Alasdair Macintyre, Andrius Bielskis•ARTICLE•Politologija•2022

Šis tekstas yra įvadas į 1995 metais perleistą 1953 metų knygą Marxism and Christianity.

  • Literature as an educator

    Open Access•Andrius Bielskis•ARTICLE•Journal of Philosophy of Education•2022•References: 4

Following the definition of ‘practice’ conceptualised in After Virtue, the paper argues that literature as creative writing and reading is a MacIntyrean practice. Literature's key internal goods are spelled out: the common aesthetic enjoyment achieved by the writer's ability to create a truthful fictional narrative the reader is drawn into and the expansion of our narrative identities and self-awareness. Against the conceptual background, the pap…

  • Thomas Mannas kritinės teorijos požiūriu

    Open Access•Andrius Bielskis•ARTICLE•Politologija•2019•References: 1

[full article and abstract in Lithuanian; abstract in English] The paper analyzes Thomas Mann’s literary work from the perspective of critical theory. By briefly discussing an alternative conception of critical theory, it emphasizes the importance of Karl Marx, Aristotle, and normativity to social and political theory. The paper argues that we need to conceptualize normativity in Aristotelian rather than Kantian terms, that is, by reinterpreting …

  • On the Genealogy of Kitsch and the Critique of Ideology

    Open Access•Andrius Bielskis•ARTICLE•Genealogy•2018

This paper examines similarities and differences between the genealogical approach to social critique and the Marxist critique of ideology. Given the key methodological aspects of Michel Foucault’s genealogy—the fusion of power and discourse and the Nietzschean notion of the aesthetization of life—the paper argues that Hollywood kitsch maybe interpreted as a new dispositif. A key task of the genealogy of kitsch is to analyze the effects of fake H…

  • Kooperacija ir išsilaisvinimo politika

    Open Access•Andrius Bielskis•ARTICLE•Sociologija Mintis ir veiksmas•2015

This article aims to provide an alternative conception of the politics of emancipation against the background of Aristotelian and Marxist theories. It links emancipatory politics with a specific notion of faith as a fundamental feature of being in the world, one enabling the interpellation of dominant ideologies and distorted political power structures. Aristotle's conception of the zoon politikon is reinterpreted in terms of an intersubjectivity…

  • Alasdairo MacIntyre’o praktinė filosofija

    Open Access•Andrius Bielskis, Egidijus Mardosas•ARTICLE•Filosofija. Sociologija•2014

This essay critically engages Jacques Derrida's and James Tully's theoretical conceptualizations of multiculturalism and the politics of recognition. It analyzes the possibilities of using deconstruction when reflecting the nature of law and violence as well as how an aporia, revealed by deconstruction, provides us with an alternate understanding of the politics of recognition. James Tully's Wittgensteinian critique of modern constitutionalism is…

  • Teleologija ir utopija Alasdairo MacIntyre'o etikoje ir politikoje

    Open Access•Andrius Bielskis•ARTICLE•Sociologija Mintis ir veiksmas•2008

The paper explores Alasdair MacIntyre's political philosophy vis-à-vis his critique of the Enlightenment project and of modernity. MacIntyre's political thought in the Anglo-American academic world is often reduced to his critique of the critique of the institution of modern nation state. The paper provides a critique of such reductionionist interpretation. It argues that MacIntyre's critique of modern liberal democracy will not be properly under…
