Right-wing populist affective governing
In the aftermath of the ‘summer of migration’ of 2015, right-wing populist discourses became increasingly commonplace. This article by Thiele, Sauer and Penz investigates the resurgence of nativist and anti-migration attitudes in Austria by focusing on parliamentary debates between 2015 and 2019 concerned with migration, asylum policies and integration measures. Their theoretical approach builds first on Cas Mudde’s conception of right-wing popul…
Neoliberal technologies of social protection
In the context of Polanyi’s ‘double movement’ of market forces and social protection this article explores the work of state agents and processes of subjectivation at the workplace according to the contemporary social policy paradigm of activation. We exemplify the transformation of welfare institutions and policies in the neoliberal period through one of the major ‘disruptive strains’ of self-regulating markets: unemployment, and we problematize…
Doing gender in public services
The restructuring of state bureaucracies into service organizations and the new welfare state paradigm of activation have changed the work requirements of front‐line workers in public employment agencies across Europe. Public employment agents are less engaged in bureaucratic labour, but have to perform service work. They use affective means to motivate and to monitor and sanction jobseekers. This article provides evidence that these transformati…
Affective governmentality
This chapter contextualises the concept of affective governmentality within two developments, the transformation towards service societies and the formation of an 'embodied capitalism', and the parallel conversion of state bureaucracies into public services. It argues that these transformations constitute 'neoliberal governmentality' from a Foucauldian perspective. The chapter discusses some methodological implications of such a Foucauldian frame…
Post-bureaucratic encounters
This article explores the activation regime in three European countries – Austria, Germany, and Switzerland – and the related transformation of state bureaucracies into customer-oriented service providers. In the case of employment services affective labour tends to characterise the work process, in which public employees seek to guide, motivate, and control jobseekers. Our study focuses on organisational mechanisms, which govern the affect manag…
Die Macht des Blicks
Affektive Subjektivierung

Ballgames of the North American Indians and in Late Medieval Europe
At first sight North American Indian and ancient European games appear to be fairly different social activities. Observed closer though, these games and their texture reveal a surprising variety of common features. This paper represents a first attempt to analyse relevant structural similarities (homologies) systematically by focusing upon ball games, in particular. The historical cross-cultural (or trans-atlantic) enterprise is based on two exem…
Sport and Speed
Physical exercises, like social life in general, have changed remarkably during the last two centuries. Violent games have become 'civilized', spacial patterns have been replaced by a temporal structuration of sports. Time, and in particular, speed, seem to be the dominant principles which shape the modern form of sport. 'Sport and Speed' analyses this recent transformational period in the history of body techniques, employing a theoretical frame…
