Brazil and South Africa-Exploring Movement to Movement Solidarity
This article examines the evolving relationship between Abahlali baseMjondolo, the South African shack dwellers' movement, and the Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra (MST), Brazil's landless workers' movement. It explores how direct solidarity between these two movements has developed over time, focusing particularly on the role of the MST's political school, the Escola Nacional Florestan Fernandes (ENFF), in internationalising the poli…
Becoming manly
This study examines how white South African men reflect on their experiences of being and becoming army veterans, while negotiating masculinity. In the context of 'high apartheid', Afrikaner domination of the socio-political landscape, ethnic and racialised inequalities, the veterans negotiated being white English-speaking men through reflecting on, critiquing and disassociating from military masculinity. An English South African masculinity was …
Black economic empowerment, development and seeking justice at South African municipalities
Although South African and international research has been enriched by a wide variety of empirical findings regarding supply chain management (SCM) corruption in South Africa, there is a significant gap in the literature, particularly in terms of the direct and indirect connections of black economic empowerment (BEE) entrepreneurs, local government and to processes of SCM at South African municipalities. This study is based on an inductive, quali…
Rebuilding active public participation after the Covid‐19 era
The consequences of COVID-19 have impacted the poor and vulnerable populations of the world significantly, particularly in countries like South Africa. State institutions have been prioritising mitigating the impacts of the pandemic. And in the academy, there has been an influx of recent scholarship contending with the psychological and physical repercussions of the pandemic. This article focuses on South Africa's rebuilding of public participati…
Bruin Ous Are the Main Ous
This study examines the importance of historical memory in galvanising constructions of masculinity in Wentworth, a formerly ‘coloured’ township in South Durban. Semi-structured focus group discussions and individual interviews with 28 coloured men uncovered a tradition of activist masculinities in the community and also revealed the complex ways in which the apartheid project continues to shape masculinity and family life in Wentworth. We explor…
Blue Lagoon
In contemporary, South Africa space continues to remain highly racialised despite shifts and changes brought about by the end of apartheid in 1994. The recreational space of the Blue Lagoon, the focus of this study, and in close proximity to the Indian Ocean was historically demarcated for the use of Indians only. In this article, the ways in which a selected group of Indian men in Durban give meaning to the changing face of Blue Lagoon are exami…
The Citizen Voice Project
Despite a legal framework for participation in South Africa, poor citizens have not to date been able to access the public services they need, leading some to talk of a ‘second democracy’, the political system as experienced by the poor. This action-research study involved local government, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), community leaders and community mobilisation to develop Water Services Scorecards, in rural Mbizana in the Eastern Cape…
Al-Qalam
This article studies and explains why and how Al-Qalam was transformed, and by implication, how and why it became one of South Africa's 'alternative press' in the 1980s. Whilst these aspects form the bulk of this essay, it also takes into account the role Al-Qalam has continued to play in the post-apartheid era; in addition, it shows how it embraced new projects that make up an important part of the current socio-political landscape in South Afri…
