A turbu- lência política interna, a "revolução cultural" n…

  • Soviet intelligence gathering in Africa in the 1960s and early 1970s: A review article

Colin Darch•ARTICLE•Review of African Political Economy•2023

The wave of independence in Africa in the late 1950s and early 1960s, combined with the ‘thaw’ after Khrushchev’s denunciation of Stalin at the 20th Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, resulted in renewed Soviet interest after two decades of ignoring African affairs. Newly established diplomatic relations with liberation movements and independent states required the rapid training of middle-level cadres who could report back accu…

  • Liberation and Biographical Narrative in Mozambican Historiography: The Struggle in Cabo Delgado, 1962-1974

Colin Darch, David Hedges•ARTICLE•Journal of Southern African Studies•2021

Over the last 25 years, memoirs and testimonies have appeared in Mozambique recounting the life stories of participants in the armed struggle for national independence led by FRELIMO (1964–1974). Most of the protagonists have remained loyal to FRELIMO and many have had political careers after independence. Their memoirs have been published in the course of reinforcing the Frelimo party’s political dominance in the early 21st century. Although som…

  • On the Right Side of History: The Trajectory of “Domestic” African Studies from Endre Sik to the Present Day

    Colin Darch•ARTICLE•Istoriya•2020

The article presents an analysis of the trajectory of “domestic” African studies in the Soviet Union and the post-Soviet Russian Federation, posing the fundamental question of the extent to which Soviet afrikanistika was in fact a manifestation of a disinterested political solidarity with the struggles of oppressed African peoples, and can be absolved of pursuing economic interests and even of harbouring colonial ambitions. The article analyses a…

  • Lusotopie, Lusotopy. What Legacy, What Future

M Cahen, Irène Dos Santos et al.•ARTICLE•Lusotopie•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 3

The introduction of this issue goes back over the history of the creation of the Lusotopie journal. It also questions the scope of the concept of lusotopy in the social sciences. The intellectual project of the journal, published from 1994 onwards, was complex and ambitious. Lusotopie is not a review of “cultural-area” studies, but a generalist review of political analysis, in the broadest sense, from an empirically-delimited research field: that…

• Separatist tensions and violence in the ‘model post-conflict state’: Mozambique since the 1990s

    Colin Darch•ARTICLE•Review of African Political Economy•2015•References: 1

Ruth changed in Mozambique; she softened. I think she belonged in Mozambique in a way that she never belonged to England. It was her home, and she meant something to that society. (Gillian Slovo, interview, 1989) This article traces the evolution of research at the Centro de Estudos Africanos (CEA) from before the time of Ruth First's arrival. It divides her work there into two periods: the work on the Mozambican Miner, in which she was heavily i…

This conference of law librarians is convened around the theme of "New Rights - New Laws." I want to argue that, with regard to information, while there are new laws aplenty, there are in fact no new rights. Worse, we are presently witnessing a steady erosion of even the existing public rights of access to and use of information content, whether of a legal nature or not. In fact, there is mounting evidence that the idea of the public domain itsel…

  • Are there warlords in provincial Mozambique? Questions of the social base of MNR banditry

    Open Access•Colin Darch•ARTICLE•Review of African Political Economy•1989•Cited by: 3•References: 5

Exploring the origins, nature and consequences of MNR violence and murder, this article argues that Renamo does not conform to the classical characteristics of warlordism. It does not represent a cession of central control to local interests; rather it is an attack on the national sovereignty of Mozambique created and perpetuated by external powers. Nevertheless, in some areas the externally imposed proxy war may have been able to achieve a certa…
