  • Junior-headed households as a possible strategy for coping with the growing orphan crisis in northern Namibia

Jan Kuhanen, Riikka Shemeikka et al.•ARTICLE•African Journal of AIDS Research•2008

This paper reports research concerning junior-headed households among Oshiwambo speakers in north-central Namibia. Based on field interviews with randomly sampled junior heads of households and selected key informants, we outline some features common to the junior-headed households and the ways in which they attempt to manage their lives. The concepts of child- and junior-headed households are also clarified. We argue that due to a significant in…

On the worldwide scale Africa is the least-known continent demographically. Until the mid-twentieth century not even the size of the population was precisely known in many areas of sub-Saharan Africa. The major problems in African historical demography have either been the almost total lack of relevant sources or, if some have been available, they have been fragmentary and non-systematic. The reliability of the most commonly-used sources in Afric…

In north Namibia the availability of continuous series of parish record data since the 1920s offer excellent possibilities to study population development on a regional level by primary sources. In this study fertility, mortality and internal migration in north Namibia among the Christian population since the mid-1920s to the 1990s is analyzed

  • Mortality transition in the Ovamboland region of Namibia, 1930-1990

Veijo Notkola, Ian M Timaeus et al.•ARTICLE•Population Studies•2000•Cited by: 6

Few long-term statistical series exist that can document the mortality transition in Africa. This paper uses data from the parish registers of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Namibia to study morality in Ovamboland between 1930 and 1990. The paper identifies significant discontinuities and reversals in the trend in mortality. Much of the mortality transition occurred in a rapid breakthrough concentrated between the early 1950s and early 1960s.…

STUDY OBJECTIVE--This study aimed firstly to describe the development of cause-specific mortality in forestry workers, farmer/forestry workers, and skilled and semiskilled construction workers between 1970 and 1985 in Finland, and to compare this with mortality in the total working male population. The second aim was to evaluate how well the cause-specific mortality differences between the occupations could be explained by differences in socioeco…
