Open Access•K Larouche, Tamarha Pierce et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Divorce & Remarriage•2023

Following parental separation, fathers' greater or lesser parental involvement relative to the other parent may be differently accounted for by father, child, and coparental factors. A representative sample of 671 separated fathers completed questionnaires two and four years after separation. For fathers less involved than the other parent, a better coparenting relationship accounts for greater T1 involvement, but predicts a decrease in involveme…

Open Access•Francine deMontigny, Christine Gervais et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2020

Research has demonstrated the short- and long-term impacts of maternal mental health and well-being on children's emotional and behavioral outcomes. It is thus important to better understand the antecedents of maternal depression and stress. The aim of this study was to determine whether the contribution of perceived paternal involvement to account for mothers' depression and parental stress was mediated by relationship factors such as parenting …

  • Does parental work affect the psychological well-being and educational success of adolescents

    Linda Tulk, Sylvie Montreuil et al.•ARTICLE•Community Work & Family•2016•Cited by: 2•References: 78

The primary goal of this exploratory study was to observe the presence or absence of empirical associations between various parental working conditions, family and, ultimately, the psychological well-being and educational success of young adolescents in Canada. A structural equation model analysis was undertaken from a large Canadian database. This research project used a sub-sample from the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth, reg…

    Open Access•Mary A Sheridan, Marne L Sherman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social and Personal…•2010•Cited by: 3•References: 38

Social support and constraint may impact cognitive processing of traumatic or stressful events, thereby influencing adjustment. This study tested a path model accounting for positive and negative affect in male spouses of women with breast cancer (N = 105). The model examined support and constraint from the patient and others, as well as mediators of cancer-related intrusive thoughts and avoidance. Constraint from the patient was associated with …

  • Global and specific relational models in the experience of social interactions

    Tamarha Pierce, John E Lydon•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•2001•Cited by: 41•References: 46

Two studies demonstrated that global and relationship-specific models of self and other are correlated but not redundant constructs. Relationship-specific models were operationalized in terms of significant role relationships (Study 1) and salient relationships (i.e., frequent interactions; Study 2). Longitudinal analyses (Study 1) suggested that specific models generalized to global ones over time and that global models had a small but significa…

Tamarha Pierce, John E Lydon et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1998•Cited by: 19

The authors used a relational schemas approach to test the effects of interpersonal expectations on responses to a stressful event. In Study 1, a subliminal priming technique was used to demonstrate the causal influence of experimentally activated interpersonal expectations on affect, support seeking, and coping responses to a hypothetical unplanned pregnancy. Activation of positive interpersonal expectations increased reports of seeking emotiona…

  • Coping with moral commitment to long-distance dating relationships

John E Lydon, John Lydon et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1997•Cited by: 15

The uncertainty of relationship transitions should elicit more elaborate cognitive processing about one's relationship. As a result, reports of a type of relationship commitment distinctive from satisfaction-moral commitment-might be obtained from those about to begin long distance relationships. Students assessed prior to the academic year reported 2 types of commitment: moral and enthusiastic. Moral commitment was highly correlated with the mea…

A value-laden basis for commitment to goals and the behavioral and affective sequelae of commitment were examined in the context of a stressful life event. Fifty-seven women who were interviewed during a clinic visit for a pregnancy test (Time 1 [T1]) subsequently received positive test results and were then interviewed 2 days later (Time 2 [T2]) and a month later (Time 3 [T3]). The intentionality and the meaning of the pregnancy were associated …
