  • The End of “New World Literature”: Migration and Creolization in Maryse Condé’s Traversée de la mangrove and V.S. Naipaul’s A House for Mr. Biswas

    Martina Kopf•ARTICLE•Journal of World Literature•2025

Caribbean history is marked by the forced migration of slaves from Africa via the Atlantic slave trade, the forced migration of contract laborers from Asia that followed the abolition of slavery, and finally, the massive increase in emigration from the Caribbean to the European metropolises, Canada, and the United States that began in the mid-20th century. Due to this experience, the Caribbean became a producer of – and a precursor to – transcult…

  • Binyavanga Wainaina's Narrative of the IMF-generation as Development Critique

    Open Access•Martina Kopf•ARTICLE•Journal of African Cultural Studies•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 15

This article looks at Binyavanga Wainaina's autobiographical and essayistic writing as a site of development theory and criticism. The focus is on his memoir One Day I Will Write About This Place (Granta, 2011). In it, Wainaina used life-writing as a genre to tell what he called the "story of the IMF-generation", meaning the children of a post-independence African middle class who came massively under pressure due to foreign-imposed structural ad…

    Open Access•Martina Kopf•ARTICLE•Cadernos de Tradução•2021

  • Encountering development in East African fiction

    Open Access•Martina Kopf•ARTICLE•The Journal of Commonwealth…•2017•References: 19

In this article I address how East African writers have responded to and conceptualized the encounter with development in works of fiction. The article combines two lines of enquiry: first, a historical perspective on “development” as a history of changing and conflicting meanings and practices in planning and controlling social and economic change, and, second, a narrative studies perspective on fiction as a source of knowledge in social and pol…
