Yellow Peril and Techno-orientalism in the Time of Covid-19
The essay examines the rise of anti-Asian aggression within the converging vectors of the pandemic, the escalation of the U.S.-China trade war, and the growing concerns about cyber- and techno-security. By analyzing the techniques and effects of race-making in the current pandemic moment and connecting them to historical antecedents, we trace the persistence of the yellow peril ideology across different contexts. We argue that the yellow peril id…

Memories of a Future Home
While the history of Asian migration to Latin America is well documented, we know little about the contemporary experience of diasporic Asians in this part of the world. Memories of a Future Home offers an intimate look at how diasporic Chinese in Panama construct a home and create a sense of belonging as they inhabit the interstices of several cultural-national formations—Panama, their nation of residence; China/Taiwan, their ethnic homeland; an…

Queen of the Chinese Colony
This essay examines the dynamics among diasporic Chinese in Central America and Panama by analyzing a beauty contest and the convention in which it takes place. I argue that diasporic identity and belonging are negotiated through and alongside gender by showing how gender difference is structured into the convention and how the beauty contest, as amicrocosm of the Chinese in this region, reflects the broader social conflicts and cultural transfor…
Cultural Citizenship of Diasporic Chinese in Panama
The air was hot and humid when the plane landed in Panama City, Panama. I had just survived twelve hours of traveling on the infamous el (the milkman) route from Los Angeles to Panama, with layovers at the capital cities of four Central American countries: Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica. Run by Central-American-based airlines, this route earned its name as el for its numerous stops throughout the region. More like commuter flig…
