Jason Tigert, Lance T Mccready et al.•ARTICLE•Sex Education•2026

In recent years, research has begun to examine the myriad of ways in which gay, bisexual, and men who have sex with men acquire their sexual health literacy, be that from clinicians, peer groups, or online media. However, little is known about the impact interactions with front-line outreach workers have in informing what GBM know about their own sexual practices and wellbeing, and whether these interactions result in behaviour change. To address…

When analyzing the data for Ontario, Canada, HIV rates continue to be highest among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (gbMSM). Since HIV diagnosis is a key component of HIV care, self-testing has provided options for allowing this population to access care, resulting in a significant number of first-time testers. Between 1 April 2021 and 31 January 2022, 882 gbMSM participants ordered an HIV self-test through GetaKit. Of these, 27…

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) youth have the potential for considerable resilience. Positive media representations may mediate negative experiences and foster self-esteem, yet the relationship between resilience and both traditional offline and new online media remains underaddressed for this population. This grounded-theory exploration of media-based resilience-building activities by LGBTQ youth (n = 19) indicated four t…

  • Call and response

    Lance T Mccready•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2011•Cited by: 5•References: 12

The shift in attention to the ‘boy crisis’ has been fuelled by a spate of popular trade books dealing with raising of boys and the alleged failures and deceptions of feminist educational reforms. This article argues that from a black feminist perspective the ‘boy crisis’ depicted in these texts is a misnomer because no social problem can be understood through a single lens of difference. Rather, through an analysis of the narratives of gay and ge…

  • Making Space” for Ourselves

    Open Access•Terah T Venzant Chambers, Lance T Mccready•ARTICLE•Urban Education•2011•Cited by: 19•References: 29

Drawing from two separate case studies, one on lower track African American students and another on gay and gender nonconforming African American male students, this article explores how students with multiple stigmatized identities make sense of and respond to their marginalization, a process we term making space . In particular, we consider how making space can support students’ psychosocial needs and at the same time work against school engage…

This article reviews scholarship that represents urban students who self-identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or questioning. It draws on empirical examples to illustrate prominent themes across this scholarship, including the homophobia they experience, the impact it has on their academic performance, and the activism it sparks. Finally, it considers implications for urban educators working with queer youth, specifically, the …

    Lance T Mccready•ARTICLE•Theory Into Practice•2004•Cited by: 32•References: 5

The author builds the case for educators to develop these kinds of frameworks by describing two experiences he had while working on a collaborative action research project. For each of the experiences, he d…
