Husserl’s Phenomenology of Phantasy: Adventures of the Quasi-Perceptual
In section II, we compare and contrast Husserl’s treatments of perception and phantasy, paying special attention to his claim that phantasy is modified perception, with quasi-perceptuality as its essential feature. In section III, quasi-perceptuality is further considered in terms of five of its constitutive aspects also identified by Husserl. Then, in section IV, we offer the first stage of a critical appraisal of Husserl’s theory by placing it …

The Kantian Aesthetic
This study explains the kind of perceptual knowledge involved in aesthetic judgments. It does so by linking Kant's aesthetics to a critically upgraded account of his theory of knowledge. By describing examples of aesthetic judgment, it is shown that these judgments must involve categories and fundamental schemata.

Space, place, and sculpture: Working with Heidegger
Literary Metaphor and Philosophical Insight: The Significance of Archilochus
Aristotle’s emphasis on ‘vividness’ in his account of metaphor is missed by many later theories. Metaphor operates by the imaginative realization and traversal of connections which exist in the ‘latent field’ of possible associations for the tenor of the metaphor. As such, it exploits and draws attention to structural features involved in all acts of cognition. The poetry of Archilochus is explored as a case study of the way in which literature i…

Art and Embodiment: From Aesthetics to Self-Consciousness
Arguing that art can bridge the gap between philosophy's traditional striving for generality and completeness, and the concreteness and contingency of humanity's basic relation to the world, Crowther proposes an ecological definition of art
Critical Aesthetics and Postmodernism
Considerable controversy has raged around the question of postmodern culture and its products. This book attempts to overcome some of the antagonistic viewpoints involved by developing themes from the work of Kant, Benjamin, and Merleau–Ponty in the context of themes from contemporary culture. Attention is paid to such topics as the relation between art and politics, the problematics of poststructuralist and feminist approaches to art, the emerge…

The Kantian Sublime: From Morality to Art
Kant's theory of the sublime has become one of the most keenly studied elements in both his own aesthetics and aesthetic theory in general. This book offers a sustained analysis of Kant's theory of the sublime as found throughout his critical philosophy but, of course, gives closest and most sustained attention to the Critique of Judgement's ‘Analytic of the Sublime’. More specifically, the book offers first an overview of Kant's general aestheti…

The Experience of Art: Some Problems and Possibilities of Hermeneutical Analysis
The dominant twentieth-century conception of aesthetic experience is, broadly speaking, a formalist one. It holds characteristically that aesthetic experience arises when, say, we perceive a painting in relation to its qualities of line and colour and their interrelations, rather than in relation to the content which those lines and colours represent. Such perception will be, in essence, 'disinterested,' i.e., pursued for its own sake, rather tha…
