    Open Access•W Andrew Harrell, Maria David-Evans et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2004

The behavior of 643 pedestrians and 1749 motorists at two signal-controlled intersections was observed over a 2-mo. period of observation in March and November. The second intersection was identical in traffic and pedestrian volume but lacked a "Fatality" sign in either March or November. "Fatality" signs are erecte…

  • Positivism in sociological research

    Open Access•C David Gartrell, John W Gartrell•ARTICLE•British Journal of Sociology•2002•Cited by: 15•References: 37

Positivism has been declared dead in sociological theory circles, yet questions remain as to its viability among researchers. The authors present diagnostic evidence about positivism in sociological practice through a content analysis of journal articles published in the late 1960s and the late 1980s in the sociological journals of the USA and Britain. Using an index based on seven elements of positivism that were characteristic of the 'theory co…

  • Positivism in Sociological Practice

    Open Access•C David Gartrell, John W Gartrell•ARTICLE•Canadian Review of Sociology/Revue…•1996•Cited by: 21•References: 30

  • The Social Context of Recycling

    Linda Derksen, John W Gartrell et al.•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•1993•Cited by: 67•References: 2

Over the last several decades, sociologists have investigated the public's increasing concern about the environment, but they have had little success explaining attitudes toward the environment or the adoption of pro-environment behaviors like recycling. We examine the role of social context in the link between individual attitudes about the environment and recycling behavior by comparing communities that vary in their access to recycling program…

  • Income Inequality and Homicide Rates

    Open Access•Harvey Krahn, Timothy F Hartnagel et al.•ARTICLE•Criminology•1986•Cited by: 69•References: 37

Previous studies have identified but failed to explain satisfactorily the positive relationship between income inequality and homicide rates. This paper proposes an explanation based on the concept of relative deprivation, but also reviews the criminological literature in a search for other theoretically relevant variables. After assessing problems of sampling and measurement, and using a considerably larger sample than used in previous studies, …

  • Labour market segmentation and social mobility in a Canadian single‐industry community

    Open Access•Harvey Krahn, John W Gartrell•ARTICLE•Canadian Review of Sociology/Revue…•1983•Cited by: 3•References: 11

  • Inequality Within Rural Communities of India

    John W Gartrell•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•1981•Cited by: 1•References: 8

One of the principal controversies in development research has revolved around questions of whether and how the production of greater economic surplus in society results in greater or lesser inequality. Recent attempts to examine these issues within a world-systems context have employed secondary analysis of cross-national surveys of income inequality (Chase-Dunn, 1975; Rubinson, 1976; Bornschier et al., 1978; Weede, 1980; Stack, 1978). These eff…

  • Status, Inequality and Innovation

    John W Gartrell•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•1977•Cited by: 3•References: 7

The manner in which status influences the trial of innovations in agriculture has important implications for agrarian development policy. Analysis of data from samples of cultivators in 84 agrarian communities in Andhra Pradesh, India, found little support for Cancian's theory that rank inhibits risk-taking, even under conditions specified as necessary for such effects. Analysis of variance results suggested that increases in status among the poo…
