  • Social support, social undermining, and acute clinical pain in women

    Open Access•Allison E Gaffey, John W Burns et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2020•References: 55

Women may be disproportionately vulnerable to acute pain, potentially due to their social landscape. We examined whether positive and negative social processes (social support and social undermining) are associated with acute pain and if the processes are linked to pain via negative cognitive appraisal and emotion (pain catastrophizing, hyperarousal, anger). Psychosocial variables were assessed in inner-city women ( N = 375) presenting to an Emer…

  • Longitudinal Associations among Discordant Sexual Orientation Dimensions and Hazardous Drinking in a Cohort of Sexual Minority Women

Open Access•Amelia E Talley, Frances Aranda et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health and Social…•2015•Cited by: 7•References: 61

We examined differences between sexual minority women's (SMW's) sexual identity and sexual behavior or sexual attraction as potential contributors to hazardous drinking across a 10-year period. Data are from a longitudinal study examining drinking and drinking-related problems in a diverse, community-based sample of self-identified SMW (Wave 1: n = 447; Wave 2: n = 384; Wave 3: n = 354). Longitudinal cross-lagged models showed that SMW who report…

  • Coming out in color

    Frances Aranda, Alicia K Matthews et al.•ARTICLE•Cultural Diversity & Ethnic…•2014•Cited by: 17•References: 23

Disclosing one's sexual minority identity, or "coming out," has varying effects on the mental health of lesbians. Previous research indicates a negative association between disclosure and depression. However, these findings are based on research with White lesbians. To date, there is a paucity of studies that examined how the relationship between disclosure and depression may differ by race/ethnicity among lesbians. To address this gap, we examin…

  • Mental Health and Suicidality Among Racially/Ethnically Diverse Sexual Minority Youths

Wendy Bostwick, Wendy B Bostwick et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2014•Cited by: 29•References: 24

Objectives. We examined the relationships among sexual minority status, sex, and mental health and suicidality, in a racially/ethnically diverse sample of adolescents. Methods. Using pooled data from 2005 and 2007 Youth Risk Behavior Surveys within 14 jurisdictions, we used hierarchical linear modeling to examine 6 mental health outcomes across 6 racial/ethnic groups, intersecting with sexual minority status and sex. Based on an omnibus measure o…

  • Exploring Alcohol-Use Behaviors Among Heterosexual and Sexual Minority Adolescents

Amelia E Talley, Tonda L Hughes et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2014•Cited by: 16•References: 50

Objectives. We examined sexual orientation status differences in alcohol use among youths aged 13 to 18 years or older, and whether differences were moderated by sex, age, or race/ethnicity. Methods. We pooled data from the 2005 and 2007 Youth Risk Behavior Surveys and conducted weighted analyses, adjusting for complex design effects. We operationalized sexual orientation status with items assessing sexual orientation identity, sexual behavior, s…

  • Longitudinal Disparities of Hazardous Drinking Between Sexual Minority and Heterosexual Individuals from Adolescence to Young Adulthood

    Open Access•Sarah S Dermody, Michael P Marshal et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Youth and Adolescence•2014•Cited by: 7•References: 21

  • The Influence of Acculturation on Substance Use Behaviors among Latina Sexual Minority Women

    Alicia K Matthews, Alicia Matthews et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2014•Cited by: 5•References: 17

Increased acculturation leads to substance use and this relationship is partially mediated by discrimination (Sobel test = 2.10; p < .05). CONCLUSIONS/IMPORTANCE: Implications of these findings and directions for future research are discussed. Funding was provided by several women's and public health organizations

  • Trajectories of Depressive Symptoms and Suicidality Among Heterosexual and Sexual Minority Youth

    Open Access•Michael P Marshal, Sarah S Dermody et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Youth and Adolescence•2013•Cited by: 18•References: 36

  • Psychological Distress in African American Lesbian and Heterosexual Women

    Tonda L Hughes, Alicia K Matthews et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Lesbian Studies•2002•Cited by: 3•References: 5

Similarities and differences in indicators of psychological distress, risk factors for distress, and methods of coping were assessed in African American lesbians and heterosexual women. Despite similar rates of risk factors, lesbians reported more indicators of psychological distress and more frequent use of alcohol or other drugs in response to stress. In addition, findings reflect an overall trend toward higher rates of drinking, alcohol-relate…
