  • Experience curve analyses for green hydrogen technology development

    Open Access•Saheed Bello, David Reiner•ARTICLE•Technological Forecasting and…•2025

Given the rapid increase in government support for green hydrogen technology development, it is important to incorporate research development and demonstration (RD&D) spending into the estimation of the learning rate for electrolysis technologies. Thus, we develop a two-factor experience curve model with spillovers and economies of scale that allows us to estimate learning rates for both alkaline and PEM (polymer electrolyte membrane) electrolysi…

  • Co-deploying biochar and bioenergy with carbon capture and storage improves cost-effectiveness and sustainability of China’s carbon neutrality

Open Access•Xu Deng, Fei Teng et al.•ARTICLE•One Earth•2025

  • Learning increases both acceptability and scrutiny of carbon dioxide removal methods

Open Access•Felix Dörpmund, David Reiner et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2025

Carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technologies are increasingly recognized as necessary complements to decarbonization efforts; however, public acceptance remains a critical implementation challenge. This study investigates the impact of educational exposure on perceptions of CDR methods among individuals with a pre-existing interest in climate solutions. We conducted a quasi-experimental study with pre- and post-surveys of participants ( n = 366 pre-…

  • Sustainable energy experiments and demonstrations

    Open Access•Sandra Hasanefendic, Marjolein Hoogstraaten et al.•ARTICLE•Energy Research & Social Science•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 25

Research into the impact of innovative sustainable energy experiments and demonstrations is crucial to diversifying, scaling up, and accelerating the sustainable energy transition. Although there is vast research into sustainable energy experiments and demonstrations, research literature offers a fragmented collection of findings. A coherent overview of themes and insights regarding the transformative impact of innovative sustainable energy exper…

  • Responsible carbon dioxide removals and the EU’s 2040 climate target

Open Access•Kati Koponen, Johanna Braun et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2024

No abstract. First para: The European Union (EU) has recently initiated the debate on its 2040 climate targets with the EU Commission’s proposal of a net 90% greenhouse gas emission reduction target relative to 1990 (EC 2024a). The EU Commission’s impact assessment indicates that carbon dioxide removals (CDR) will play an important role in the EU’s climate policy for 2040, on a path to EU’s climate neutrality target in 2050 (EC 2024b). The scienc…

  • Sustainable scale-up of negative emissions technologies and practices

Open Access•Selene Cobo, Valentina Negri et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2022

Most climate change mitigation scenarios restricting global warming to 1.5 °C rely heavily on negative emissions technologies and practices (NETPs). Here we updated previous literature reviews and conducted an analysis to identify the most appealing NETPs. We evaluated 36 NETPs configurations considering their technical maturity, economic feasibility, greenhouse gas removal potential, resource use, and environmental impacts. We found multiple tra…

  • Off seasons, holidays and extreme weather events

    Open Access•Jieyi Kang, David Reiner•ARTICLE•Energy Research & Social Science•2022•References: 1

The fine-grained electricity consumption data created by advanced metering technologies offers an opportunity to understand residential demand from new angles. Although there exists a large body of research on demand response in short- and long-term forecasting, household consumption behaviour studies based on smart metering data has not been discussed as much as the demand load studies, especially limited research focusing the residential consum…

  • Climate Policy after the 2015 Paris Climate Conference

Joanna Depledge, David Reiner et al.•BOOK•Climate Policy after the 2015…•2021

The landmark 2015 Paris Agreement, adopted to widespread acclaim at the 21 st Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), reflects profound political cleavages and tensions, which were already condensed, even camouflaged, in the wording of the mandate that launched the negotiations, as set out in the 2011 Durban Platform for Enhanced Action 1 .Of particular note are the opaque formulat…

  • Comparing public attitudes towards energy technologies in Australia and the UK

  • Protests and Policies

    Open Access•Olaf Corry, David Reiner•ARTICLE•Sociology•2021•Cited by: 6•References: 51

How do radical movements seeking fundamental social change engage with nearer-term policy dilemmas? Disciplinary boundaries and practical obstacles have limited research into protester policy engagement. Using a hybrid method combining participant-observation and expert-led focus groups, we document activist attitudes concerning controversial climate policy options. Data gathered at 'Climate Camps' in six national contexts are presented alongside…

  • Peeling back the label—exploring sustainable palm oil ecolabelling and consumption in the United Kingdom

Open Access•Rosemary Ostfeld, David Howarth et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2019

Palm oil production has been linked to deforestation, biodiversity loss, and climate change. We explore consumer awareness of palm oil, perceptions of its environmental impact, recognition of ecolabels including the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) ecolabel, and inclusion or avoidance of ecolabels in household shopping using a representative sample of the British population. We find consumer awareness of palm oil to be fairly high (77%),…

  • Carbon capture and storage (CCS)

    Open Access•Mai Bui, Claire S Adjiman et al.•ARTICLE•Energy & Environmental Science•2018

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is vital to climate change mitigation, and has application across the economy, in addition to facilitating atmospheric carbon dioxide removal resulting in emissions offsets and net negative emissions. This contribution reviews the state-of-the-art and identifies key challenges which must be overcome in order to pave the way for its large-scale deployment.

  • Where can I go to see one? Risk communications for an ‘imaginary technology’

David Reiner, David M Reiner•ARTICLE•Journal of Risk Research•2015

One of the major challenges of risk communications for CCS is the fact that, to date at least, the projects are themselves largely ‘imaginary’ – globally, there are no full-chain power plants opera

  • Getting Ready for Carbon Capture and Storage by Issuing Capture Options

Open Access•Xi Liang, David Reiner et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•2010•References: 10

A capture option is an option contract where the option holder can exercise a contract to retrofit an existing fossil fuel plant to capture carbon dioxide (CO2) on or before a fixed date. We suggest that new thermal power plants, particularly those in developing countries, consider issuing capture options at the design stage, because the sellers-the owners of newly built thermal power plants-may then invest in making these plants CO2 capture read…
