Educational aspirations on the move: Parenting, social class, and children’s mobilities in South Korea
This paper explores how South Korean parents’ aspirations for their children’s education shape children’s spatial mobilities across social classes. Drawing on in-depth interviews with parents of children aged 4–13, this study examines how social class influences parents’ strategies for arranging both occasional and daily mobility practices for their children, including family trips, language camps, excursions, and daily commutes. The analysis hig…

Becoming a ‘good parent’: Social class and talk labour among South Korean parents
This ethnographic study explores how South Korean parents understand their language use as a significant resource for their children's education. By expanding the concept of ‘talk labour’, this article examines how South Korean parents report on managing their day‐to‐day communication with their children as part of their educational work and how they conceptualize and evaluate their talk labour in different ways according to their socioeconomic b…

Not to Study, But to Experience: Parental Aspirations, Children's Happiness and Alternative Pathways to Going Global in South Korea
South Korea has been known for high rates of 'early study abroad' (ESA) or jogi yuhak participation, in which pre-college students go abroad for an international education. However, this trend has declined recently. Instead, many Korean parents and their children are seeking the benefits of 'studying abroad' without leaving Korea for long periods. Based on in-depth interviews with Korean parents, I explore various strategies they employ to provid…
Navigating conflicting desires: Parenting practices and the meaning of educational work in urban East Asia
Today parents are faced with increasing expectations to attend to their young children’s learning and cognitive development. South Korea and Singapore are well-known for their competitive education systems and for consistently topping international student assessment tests. They also share an inflated private tuition industry, fuelled by the assumption that parents are compelled to invest substantial resources and time to support their children's…

A pathway to 'constant becoming: Time, temporalities and the construction of self among South Korean educational migrants in Singapore
This study explores the significance and complexity of time practices and experiences in understanding the emerging identities and aspirations of South Korean pre-college students and their mothers who moved to Singapore for the children’s education. I adopt the notion of chronotope, a spatial-temporal frame for a specific type of personhood, to analyze (1) the discrepant experiences of time and temporalities between Korean students and their acc…
Beat Your Child with a Flower!”
As a new dimension of transnational connections between East and Southeast Asia, this paper explores educational migration of South Korean “early study abroad” ( jogi yuhak ) students and accompanying mothers to Singapore. In examining Asian educational migrants to the “West”, many previous studies tend to focus on the accumulation of cultural and linguistic capital not available within Asia. However, I argue that the study of educational migrati…
Perceived overload as a predictor of physical strain among spousal and adult child caregivers of frail elders in the community
Family caregivers of frail elders can experience physical strain associated with caregiving. Identifying correlates of caregiver strain can provide an important impetus for tackling the causes and providing effective interventions. Utilizing data from the 1999 National Long-Term Care Survey, the current study examined correlates of caregiver physical strain among 956 family caregivers, using the stress process model. As multiple regression analys…
Depression Among Korean Immigrant Elders Living in Canada and the United States: A Comparative Study

Results revealed discrepancies between the 2 subgroups. Years since immigration and number of health concerns were positively associate…
Global citizens in the making: Child-centred multimedia ethnographic research on South Korean student migrants in Singapore
This study of South Korean pre-college students in Singapore has two goals: (1) to propose multimedia ethnography as a method for examining children's views on migration; and (2) to use this method to explore intersections between globality and locality in children's migration experiences. Multimedia ethnography allows the ethnographer to analyse how children reflect on and shape their experiences and imaginations through examining various modes …
Singlish or Globish: Multiple language ideologies and global identities among Korean educational migrants in Singapore1
South Korean early study abroad students and their parents in Singapore negotiate and redefine the values of Mandarin, English, and Singlish used in Singapore in an attempt to forge their own transnational identities. In this process, these Korean migrants tend to place more emphasis on metapragmatic discourses; that is,howto speak the languages appropriately. They then use such metapragmatic evaluations to justify their use of the local varietie…

Unintelligibility and imaginative interpretation in a Petalangan healing ritual
This article explores how ritual unintelligibility reconfigures participants' engagement, based on an analysis of two video clips of a belian performance, a shamanic healing ritual practiced among the Petalangan of Indonesia. These video clips show two phases of the ritual: the shaman's performance of a magic spell and a ritual song. The analysis reveals how a specific mode of unintelligibility in each scene of the ritual emerges through the mism…

Staged" Rituals and "Veiled" Spells
This article analyzes shifting forms and meanings of two Petalangan traditional genres of verbal magic, a public healing ritual and a genre of personal magical spells, in the context of the Petalangan social marginalization. To explain why and how these two genres have changed differently, this article focuses on the roles of two different language ideologies, the referentialist and performativist views of language, in the mediation between the l…
