  • Practical Knowledge and the Rhetoric of Experience

Maria Pia Donato•ARTICLE•Early Science and Medicine•2022

This article deals with early modern surgical case literature, more specifically with printed collections of observations in surgery. It examines the work of late seventeenth- to late eighteenth-century Italian practitioners from different backgrounds and of different statuses, and highlights the complexity of cognitive and social purposes pervading the genre, besides that of sharing empirical knowledge. These can be apprehended through a second …

  • Nicolas Bourguinat, « Et in Arcadia ego… ». Voyages et séjours de femmes en Italie, 1770-1870

    Maria Pia Donato•ARTICLE•Clio•2019

Medicine and the Inquisition offers a wide-ranging and nuanced account of the role played by the Roman, Spanish and Portuguese Inquisitions in shaping medical learning and practice in the period from 1500 to 1850. Until now, learned medicine has remained a secondary subject in scholarship on Inquisitions. This volume delves into physicians’ contributions to the inquisitorial machinery as well as the persecution of medical practitioners and the ce…

  • Anatomy of a Scandal

Maria Pia Donato•ARTICLE•Early Science and Medicine•2018

In the 1690s the Roman Inquisition targeted medical circles, as they allegedly disseminated atheism under the veil of new explanations of the body. This article revisits these affairs, focussing on Rome. It argues that increased inquisitorial pressure must be set against the backdrop of struggles for hegemony in the papal curia, in which physicians were entangled. Notwithstanding such political vicissitudes, ecclesiastical control played a releva…

  • Introduction

Maria Pia Donato•ARTICLE•Journal of Early Modern History•2018•Cited by: 5

In the last decades, a vast body of literature has scrutinized the archive, regarding it as an instrument of power for the Western conquest of the world. More recently, a new, vibrant cultural history of archives has changed our understanding of archives as a fully-fledged historical object and why they matter for extending the geographical scope of history and achieving a more connected image of modernity. The articles assembled in this themed i…

  • Les doutes de l'Inquisiteur. Philosophie naturelle, censure et théologie à l'époque moderne

    Open Access•Maria Pia Donato•ARTICLE•Annales Histoire Sciences Sociales•2009•References: 14
