Plays, Dreams, and Translations: On Sallis’s Logic of Imagination
Among the different themes that occupy John Sallis’s works, the development of a logic of imagination is central to his oeuvre. Following some of the traces in Sallis’s works to the plays of William Shakespeare and the thought of Martin Heidegger, this essay aims to show, first, that his logic of imagination offers an alternative logic that is no longer in the orbit of metaphysics; second, that in his logic of imagination an enlarged but ambiguou…
Cosmology and Meontology: Continental Philosophy and Saint Paul
The philosophical turn to the letters of Saint Paul in the 1990s can also be read as a critical assessment of the concept of κόσμος , especially in the philosophical sense of order. In this article, it is shown that especially the so-called “meontological passages” to which philosophers such as Heidegger, Agamben, Badiou and Taubes equally turn, can be read in terms of such a critical assessment. The article opens with exploring the stakes of pre…

Distantiation, Post-Critique, and Realism. Reconsidering the Relation of Phenomenology and Hermeneutics in Ricœur
Recent developments in literary theory and philosophy, specifically regarding the role of critique, that inspire the turn to post-critique and realism, respectively, indicate a renewed sensitivity for concerns characteristic of hermeneutic phenomenology. This essay argues that crucial aspects of Ricœur’s articulation of phenomenology and hermeneutics may help to understand and support post-critique and realism and that, in turn, the latter two in…

Witnessing the Uninhabitable Place: On the Experience and Testimony of Refugees
Symptomatic of the crisis of the current global political order are the millions of displaced that have fled their homes but are not allowed to enter the country in which they seek refuge. Instead, they are placed in camps. To understand the site of the camp and the bare life it produces, testimonies of refugees are indispensable. This essay aims to examine and listen to these testimonies by, first, introducing the notion of testimony and some of…
Witnessing and Testimony in Hermeneutic Phenomenology
Departing from two diverging lines of inquiry of testimony that characterize philosophy today, this article aims to show what a hermeneutic phenomenology of witnessing and testimony is and how this approach to testimony offers a new framework to understand witnessing and testimony, which also repositions the present-day main lines of inquiry of testimony. The first section offers a critical assessment of the state of the art in the philosophy of …

Exile, Use, and Form-of-Life: On the Conclusion of Agamben's Homo Sacer series
The last two volumes of Giorgio Agamben's Homo Sacer series are concerned with developing a theory of use. This article offers a critical assessment of the two concepts, use and form-of-life, that form the heart of this theory: how do these two notions offer a solution to the problem of bare life that forms the core of the Homo Sacer series? First, the author describes how the original problem of bare life is taken up in The Use of Bodies and how…
Contingency and Skepticism in Agamben’s Thought
Gert-Jan van der Heiden’s “Contingency and Skepticism in Agamben’s Thought” articulates an encounter between Sextus Empiricus and Giorgio Agamben. Contrary to the usual epistemological reading of ancient skepticism, van der Heiden points out the ontological import of skeptical problems. Van der Heiden focuses especially on how skeptical and quasi-skeptical terms (such as ἐποχή and οὐ μᾶλλον , the Platonic εὐπορία , and the Pauline καταργεῖν ) und…
The abandonment of hermeneutics and the potentialization of the past: Nancy and Agamben on the loss of tradition
Both Agamben and Nancy introduce the notions of ban and abandonment to understand the contemporary experience of the loss of tradition. Whereas Nancy reinterprets hermeneutics in light of this abandonment, Agamben tries to move beyond this account of abandonment. In this article, I examine how these two positions are related and to which conceptions of hermeneutics and tradition they give rise. First, I explore how the notion of abandonment provi…
The Letter and the Witness: Agamben, Heidegger, and Derrida
In Remnants of Auschwitz, Agamben introduces a particular conception of bearing witness to overcome the problems contained in an account of language that depends on the voice or the letter. From his earlier work, it is clear that his critique of the voice and the letter is not only directed to ancient and medieval metaphysics, but also concerns Heidegger's account of the voice and Derrida's account of the letter and writing. Yet, if Agamben is co…

The Voice of the Past in the Present
A dialogue is not only concerned with speaking with other people about something, but also includes a speaking for those who can no longer speak as well as for their opinions. In this first part of this essay, in discussion with authors such as Gadamer, Ricoeur and Derrida, I will show in which sense the dimension of speaking for... is part of a hermeneutic conception of dialogue and in which sense this speaking for... helps me in applying the mo…
Hermeneutics and the Provisional Character of Dialogue
The model of dialogue has been of crucial importance for the philosophical-hermeneutic account of interpretation ever since Schleiermacher. In this essay we investigate how contemporary hermeneutics accounts for this model in terms of provisionality and how the attention to provisionality marks the contemporary hermeneutic conception of interpretation. We will do so by first exploring how the theme of provisionality arises in Martin Heidegger's w…
