Factors associated with catch‐up growth in early infancy in rural Pakistan: A longitudinal analysis of the women's work and nutrition study
The adverse health impacts of early infant stunting can be partially ameliorated by early catch-up growth. Few studies have examined predictors of and barriers to catch-up growth to identify intervention points for improving linear growth during infancy. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of, and factors associated with, catch-up growth among infants in Pakistan. A longitudinal study of mother-infant dyads (n = 1,161) was conducted in ru…
Women’s agricultural work and nutrition in South Asia: From pathways to a cross-disciplinary, grounded analytical framework
In this systematic review, we aim to examine the impact of women’s work in agriculture on maternal and child nutrition in South Asia. Building on previous reviews supported under the Leveraging Agriculture for Nutrition in South Asia (LANSA) consortium, and recent published literature, we include findings from new LANSA research. While mapping literature onto the gender-nutrition pathways linking agriculture to nutrition (Kadiyala et al., 2014), …
Going Against the Grain of Optimism: Flour Fortification in Pakistan
Food fortification is a popular strategy for addressing ‘hidden hunger’, and staple foods are seen as promising, if unproven, vehicles for the delivery of essential micronutrients to poor people in developing countries. This article examines wheat flour fortification with iron in Pakistan as a case of technocratic optimism in the face of institutional constraints. An evaluative framework based on the analysis of entire value chains can provide a …
Milk for Milk, Water for Water? Pakistan’s Dairy Value Chain Innovation
Interventions in agri-food value chains are thought to potentially make important contributions towards enhancing agriculture’s role in nutrition. Some frameworks have begun to identify sets of requirements for pro-nutrition value chains. Pakistan’s dairy sector has been the focusof a business-driven innovation which introduced ultra-high temperature (UHT)-treated milk in aseptic packaging. This was expected to relieve existing constraints in pro…
Food Prices and the Politics of Hunger: Beneath Market and State
What accounts for the persistence of hunger and undernutrition in political and administrative systems which might be otherwise sensitive to the risk of food price volatility and market failure? If pre-empting food price volatility has a political constituency why is there not a similar constituency for preventing vulnerability to hunger? The policy response to globally-driven food price volatility in Pakistan was largely successful in achieving …
Inflation and Food Security in Pakistan: Impact and Coping Strategies
Food security will remain an important component of any strategy for nutritional improvement in Pakistan. The country experienced acute price spikes and shortages during 2007 and 2008, corresponding with food price inflation and volatility in global markets. This led to the clearer articulation of a food security approach based on a closer alignment with world prices and the establishment of a cash transfer programme to compensate poor households…
Agriculture and Nutrition in Pakistan: Pathways and Disconnects 1
Results of the latest nationwide nutrition survey show that the ‘South Asian paradox’ of persistently high rates of undernutrition despite respectable rates of economic growth appears to hold true for Pakistan. Although nutrition has largely been framed as a health issue in Pakistan, it is an outcome of complex processes. Amongst various economic sectors, agriculture – a sector that employs 45 per cent of the workforce in Pakistan – might have di…
Seeing the Unseen: Breaking the Logjam of Undernutrition in Pakistan
After a lost decade, there is clearly a groundswell of momentum for nutrition in Pakistan, driven by a confluence of policy, evidence and events. This momentum needs to be sustained at the national level, reinforced at the provincial and sub?provincial levels, and converted into action. The articles in this IDS Bulletin highlight some of the key features of undernutrition in Pakistan and its drivers. The correlates of undernutrition in Pakistan a…
Informality and Political Violence in Karachi
This paper proposes an understanding of political violence in a major metropolis through the lens of informality in urban planning and land use. Political conflict in Karachi has been examined largely from the lens of ethnic identity. Here it is shown, using census data, how urban planning was implicated in the evolution of the city’s ethnic demography. Election results at the polling station level further confirm the importance of territory in K…
Class, caste and housing in rural Pakistani Punjab: The untold story of the Five Marla Scheme
This article examines the contemporary significance of caste as a dimension of social stratification in Pakistani Punjab, using rural housing as a vantage point. Work on the interplay of class and kinship group, mediated by status hierarchy between agricultural and non-agricultural castes, serves as a point of departure. The organisation of the system of private property in rural land, based on the colonial village record and land alienation laws…
The Making of a 'Colony' in Karachi and the Politics of Regularisation
Around half of Karachi’s population resides in localities that started life as unplanned settlements, which acquired different levels of security from eviction. This paper examines the relationship between demand-making by unplanned settlements and urban political process. It interprets the gradual transformation of a cluster originally on the geographic and social periphery of the city into a regularised colony through the lens of collective act…
Residential Security as Social Protection
This article argues that residential insecurity and social marginalisation are closely linked, particularly in communities where housing is accessed through traditional and patriarchal social institutions. It uses community histories from rural areas of the Sindh province in Pakistan to analyse the processes and impacts of a scheme for the regularisation of housing rights for the landless poor, with a special focus on mobilisation among the socia…
Pakistan
The collection and reporting of data on international migration into and from Pakistan have not kept up with the volume and diversity of the country's international migration experience. The Ministry of Labour and Overseas Pakistani, the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are the three ministries which produce data on international migration from Pakistan. The census is the main source of information on the foreign populatio…
Pre-modern, Modern and Post-modern Famine in Iraq
Famine conditions in Iraq since the 1990sThe UN Security Council imposed economic sanctions against Iraq in August 1990 in response to Iraq' s military invasion of Kuwait. The sanctions banned all trade with Iraq, virtually isolating its economy from the rest of the world. There was a limited lifeline through Jordan, but this was a mere trickle compared with Iraq' s historical dependence on foreign trade for its basic sustenance.Prior to the imposi…
