Beyond the mole
The SHIPs project examines ancient harbours from a maritime perspective, analysing integrated harbour systems across contrasting environments in the Mediterranean region. Application of standardised analyses demonstrates that extra-basin anchorage zones played a decisive role in determining harbour capacity and enables more robust evaluation and comparative ranking of ancient ports.
A Harbour in South Tiberias? Summary of the 2020–2022 Excavations at the Miriam’s Well Beach (South Tiberias Lake Area Project)
The North Caesarea 1 shipwreck
The North Caesarea 1 shipwreck, briefly explored in the 1980s, is one of the few hulls of the Hellenistic and early Imperial periods excavated in the Eastern Mediterranean. This investigation relies on the meticulous re-examination of primary excavation data to help answer some questions regarding this hull that probably belonged to a large vessel
From Old Cannon to Iron Pigs
The introduction of iron pigs, or kentledge, was a significant change in the ballasting of warships that heavily impacted early modern naval logistics. A close examination of printed sources and excavation reports of seven shipwrecks demonstrates the French navy’s progressive adaptation of kentledge as ballast around 1759 to 1830. Following British use, iron pigs replaced old cannon and round shot. This change in ballasting practices greatly faci…
Dating of a ring on one of the largest known Roman iron anchors (La Grande-Motte, France)
Repositioning the Sea on the Great Altar of Pergamon
The Telephos frieze of the Great Altar of Pergamon contains a rare testimony of boat construction in the Hellenistic period, portraying specialized tools and working practices in an ancient boatyard. The sculpture documents the building of a small boat, offering rare insight into ancient boatbuilding. The vessel of Auge, mother of the Trojan hero Telephos, is a symmetrical skiff with two rounded ends resembling a coffin, a typology barely evidenc…

The size of wooden components in relation to the tonnage of Greek and Roman ships
This article focuses on the size of tonnage as an impact on the size of wooden components in a ship. It is based on a list of 66 tonnages, elaborated via a methodology employing three methods to determine tonnage (reconstruction of the hull lines, the tonnage formula, and the weight of the cargo). This list notes the thickness of the planking and of the moulded side of the frames. However, the article also explores further factors that are involv…
Aboard a Rudderless Ship
The stern rudder presents a formidable challenge to the power of the sea. Already extant by the twelfth century in the Frisian region, it has long been compared with the quarter rudder of antiquity. Past scholarly studies have focused almost entirely on the reasons for its creation, ignoring the complex evolution of this steering system. The disastrous consequences of the rudder’s loss mid-voyage made its replacement necessary, although this was …
The Dung Boats of Memphis (2 nd –3 rd Centuries CE)
The πλοῖον κοπρηγόν was a specific kind of boat that was dedicated to the conveyance of manure. It is evidenced in Memphis only by two Roman papyri. It seems that there were several kinds of such boats, operating on various scales and revealing various architectural features. The conveyance of dung may imply elites who were interested in a lucrative agriculture
The underwater deposit of cape Gros has been the subject of surveys in recent years. It has not yielded any significant remains of a ship, but corresponds to a shipwreck site, as shown by several tenuous elements. On the other hand, it has yielded the remains of a cargo of Pascual 1 amphorae. Archaeometric analyses have shown that this very homogeneous cargo comes from the same area, and probably from the same workshop located in the vicinity of …
