The Last Caravan: Camels, Traders and Markets in the Middle East
What can travelling camels tell us about the history of the interior of the Middle East? In this innovative book Philippe Pétriat demonstrates how caravans - groups of travellers, often on trade expeditions, journeying together for mutual protection in hostile regions - are essential to understanding the history of the inside territories of the Ottoman Empire with its neighbours. From the first use of camels in transport, through to the decline o…
Laleh Khalili, Sinews of War and Trade: Shipping and Capitalism in the Arabian Peninsula
Laleh Khalili’s Sinews of War and Trade is an original contribution to the Arabian Peninsula’s history and political economy. Although it eventually hints at many references and shows great skills in documenting and connecting facts around the Arabian Peninsula, the book’s ambition is neither strictly academic, nor comprehensive. “It wanted to tell stories” claims the author (p. 6) so that the reader is plunged into the world of ports, in their m…
Back to Asia? South Asia and the Arabian Peninsula
Let’s start with a recent development: the famous yet old and small Shiva temple located next to Dubai creek that was the only official place of worship for Hindus in the UAE has finally been given company, with the opening in October 2022 in Jebel Ali Village’s ‘Corridor of Tolerance’ of a grand new Hindu temple, near a complex of several Christian churches. Both temples (along with the about ten other similar places of worship located in coloni…
The Uneven Age of Speed: Caravans, Technology, and Mobility in the Late Ottoman and Post-Ottoman Middle East
This article explores the way overland mobility was transformed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, during “the age of speed.” Beyond the already well-known caravan-to-car story, it argues that slow means of transportation such as caravans kept their own rationale and were instrumental in producing an economic geography that proved resilient in the face of the celebrated steam- or fuel-motorized means of accelerated mobility. Adopting the …
Caravan Trade in the Late Ottoman Empire: The ʿAqīl Network and the Institutionalization of Overland Trade
Building on recent works on Central Asia and using Ottoman, Arabic and European sources, this article challenges the idea that caravan trade was declining in the 19th and 20th-century Ottoman Middle East. It explores the caravan trade’s economic and political dimensions from the Gulf to Syria. This trade’s resurgence was simultaneous with the reassertion of imperial control over the steppe. In that changing context, the institutionalization of ca…

For Pilgrims and for Trade
This article argues that public works were a major field where local notables associated themselves with Ottoman plans during the Tanzimat period. The documents this article is built on aim at evidencing the very tangible aspect of Ottomanization when imperial interests matched local ones. First, plans for urban modernization were wisely endorsed by the main merchants of Jeddah to enhance the port facilities. Second, Ottoman archives highlight ho…
