Utilizing data from over 11,000 posts and 127,000 responses on Reddit groups over a 10-year period, we employed AI-powered content analysis to examine patterns in the discussions of Reddit users who post about prison and who the model classifies as before/after incarceration across various topics. Our findings revealed significant shifts regarding personal issues. These included issues relative to users’ mental health, substance use, spirituality…

How do protests affect Americans' gun ownership decisions? Using a novel dataset of gun-related web searches in combination with geocoded protest data, we examine the effects of the 2020 Black Lives Matter (BLM) protests on Americans' interest in firearm purchase. Using a unique data set of searches by more than 1 million Bing users before and after the election, we examine the changes in mental-health-related searches among Democrats and Republicans. We then compare these changes to shifts in searches among Spanish-speak…

In the last decade, social networks have emerged as a significant media platform for dissemination of political information. In this article, we characterize linguistic factors that affect the dissemination of a political message on Twitter. This is important because characterization of messages that were posted by users from both political camps can provide a unique insight into how rival audiences can be reached. We analyze about 20,000 Twitter…

The ability of modern web services such as news aggregators and search engines to tailor their results to the tastes of individuals, together with people's preference for reading opinions which reinforce their own viewpoints, have raised concerns that people are nowadays exposed to a narrow range of view-points, a phenomenon referred to as the “filter bubble”.
